Swimming and Diving Stays in First After Day 2 of the Zippy Invitational - Set Meet Record in 400y MR

AKRON, Ohio - The Akron Swimming and Diving team stayed in first place and set a meet record on the second day of the Zippy Invitational.
After setting a meet record in the 200-yard MR on day one, the Zips set a meet record in the 400-yard MR with a time of 3:33.48.
Madelyn Gatrall led off the relay squad with a time of 51.93 to record the fastest unofficial 100-yard backstroke in the MAC. The "Z" squad of Gatrall (51.93), Claire Cox (1:00.05), Abigail Daniel(52.47) and Ada Szwabinska (49.03) finished with a time of 3:33.48 to break last year's record of 3:34.22, also set by the Zips.
Akron maintained its first-place standing after finishing day two with 802 points while Buffalo finished second with 625 points and Cornell finished third with 577 points.
The Zips started the day with two of the top times in the 500-yard free prelims. Elle Couture (4:55.08) finished first while Helena Lalkovic (4:56.54) finished third. Five Zips in total qualified for the finals.
Akron took two of the top four times in the 200-yard IM as Rebecca Reid (2:01.78) took second and Abigail Dainel (2:03.13) took fourth. Seven Zips qualified for the finals.
The Blue and Gold captured the top five times in the 50-yard free with Szwabinska (23.02), Aislinn Holder (23.04) and Daniel (23.04) taking the top three times. 10 Zips in total qualified for the finals.
In the one-meter dive event, Laurel Smith qualified for the finals with a score of 247.00 while finishing sixth in the finals with a score of 259.85.
Akron claimed four of the top five spots in the 500-yard free finals as Dominika Kossakowska (4:50.83), Couture (4:51.27) and Lalkovic (4:53.65) swam the top three times while Maggie Patterson (4:56.31) finished fifth.
The Zips claimed gold once again as Daniel took the top spot in the 200-yard IM with an NCAA B Cut of 1:57.28 while Reid finished second with an NCAA B cut time of 1:58.80.
Akron swept the top six times in the 50-yard free with Daniel (22.64), Madelyn Gatrall (22.80) and Szwabinska (22.95) taking the top three times. Holder (23.00), Hannah Trainer (23.15) and Calle Parkes (23.18) finished fourth, fifth and sixth.
The Zips finished the night by setting a meet record in the 400-yard MR while also taking first and second. The "I" squad of Reid (54.34), Madelyn Bosler (1:02.01), Holder (54.14) and Trainer (48.99) finished second with a time of 3:39.48.
On the men's side, Noel De Geus of Keiser University set a meet and pool record in the 50-yard free with a time of 19.54, besting the previous mark of 19.60 set by Christain Bart of Oakland in 2021.
The Cornell men's 400-yard MR squad of Blake Conway, Sebastian Wolff, Jacques Grove and Dominic Edwards set a meet record with a time of 3:09.37. The previous meet record was set in 2022 by Penn with a time of 3:09.40.
Day three of the Zippy Invitational begins on Saturday, December 7 at 9 a.m.
