Akron Comes Up Short in 73-51 Loss to Kent State

KENT, Ohio - The University of Akron women's basketball team fell short in a 73-51 loss to rival Kent State on the road on Saturday (Feb. 1).
The Zips had three players score in double figures, led by redshirt Shelbee Brown (Memphis, Tenn.), who had 15 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Freshman Ni'Rah Clark (Toledo, Ohio) tacked on 10 points, two steals and two blocks, while senior Alexus Mobley (Indianapolis, Ind.) chipped in as well with 10 points. Brown finished in double figures in scoring for the sixth consecutive game and for the 12th time in the last 14 contests for the Zips.
Akron forced 17 Kent State turnovers and turned those takeaways into 17 points on the other end of the floor. Redshirt senior Emily Hall (Phoenix, N.Y.) led the way individually with four steals.
How It Happened
Kent State parlayed an 18-0 run in the opening quarter to assume a 20-4 lead after a period of play, an advantage they didn't relinquish in the affair.
The Zips shooting improved in the second quarter but the Golden Flashes entered the intermission maintaining a 39-14 lead.
Kent State continued to increase its margin after halftime, building a 64-28 advantage before Akron went on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 64-33 with 47 seconds to go in the third. The Zips entered the fourth quarter trailing 66-35. Akron played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 21 points in the paint.
Kent State constructed a 69-35 advantage before Akron went on a 9-0 run, finished off by junior Maddie Vejsicky's (New Concord, Ohio) layup, to shrink the deficit to 69-44 with 3:59 to go in the contest. The Zips kept their comeback going, but Kent State managed to hold on for the 73-51 win. Akron took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.
