Zips On Fire! Akron Takes Top Spot After First Day of CSCAA National Invitational Championships

OCALA, Fla. - The Akron swimming and diving team concluded the first day of the CSCAA National Invitational Championships with the top spot.
Akron finished the first day of action in first with 209.5 points while Queens (N.C.) took second with 193.5 points and Florida International took third with 172.5 points.
The Zips saw two swimmers advance to the finals in the 50-yard back with Madelyn Gatrall and Rebecca Reid placing in the top 10. Gatrall finished sixth with a time of 25.14 while Reid finished seventh with a time of 25.15.
Elle Couture moved to the finals after a 16th-place finish and a time of 4:52.02. Felicia Klintemar finished tied for eighth in the 50-yard fly with a time of 24.44.
Reid placed in the top five in the 200-IM prelims with a fourth-place finish and a time of 2:00.23. The 50-yard breast saw Claire Cox advance to the finals after an 11th-place finish and a time of 28.61.
Ada Szwabinska led Akron in the 50-yard free with a fifth-place finish and a time of 22.90. Aislinn Holder also moved on to the finals with a 20th-place finish and a time of 23.31.
The Zips started the finals on Thursday with a gold in the 200-yard free relay. The relay squad of Szwabinska (22.54), Holder (22.45), Hannah Trainer (22.87) and Callie Parkes (22.87) took the top time of 1:30.15.
The 50-yard back finals saw Gatrall take fourth with a time of 24.84 while Reid placed in the top 10 with a seventh-place finish with a time of 25.07.
Couture finished 16th in the 500-yard free with a time of 4:52.28 while Klintemar took gold in the 50-yard fly with a time of 23.82. Holder finished 11th in the 50 fly with a time of 24.24.
The 200-IM featured Reid taking fourth with a time of 2:00.02 while Szwabinska and Cox placed in the top 15 in the 50-yard breast with times of 28.22 and 28.23.
Szwabinska took bronze in the 50-yard free to pace the Blue and Gold with a time of 22.53. Holder took 11th with a time of 22.91.
Akron took gold in another relay event, this time the 400-yard Medley Relay. The squad of Gatrall (53.03), Bosler (1:01.84), Klintemar (52.35) and Kossakowska (49.39) took the top time of 3:36.61.
The Zips begin day two of the National Invitational Championships tomorrow, March 14 at 9:30 a.m.
