Brown, Mobley Combine to Score 42, Akron Falls to Central Michigan, 70-61

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Redshirt senior Shelbee Brown (Memphis, Tenn.) and senior Alexus Mobley (Indianapolis, Ind.) combined to score 42 total points, but the Akron women's basketball team fell to Central Michigan, 70-61, on Saturday (March 8).
Brown led the Zips with 24 points and five steals. Mobley added 18 points and eight rebounds, while freshman Ni'Rah Clark (Toledo, Ohio) chipped in with seven points and six rebounds.
Clark pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second-chance opportunities for Akron, grabbing 13 boards and turning them into 14 second-chance points.
Akron forced 15 Central Michigan turnovers while committing only nine themselves. The Zips turned those takeaways into 11 points on the offensive end of the floor. Brown's five steals led the way for Akron.
How It Happened
After falling behind 11-10, Akron went on a 6-0 run with 3:29 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from senior Zakia Rasheed (Avon, Ind.), to take a 16-11 lead. The Zips entered the quarter break with an 18-17 advantage. Akron did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 18 points close to the basket.
The Chippewas shot more than 58 percent from the floor in the second quarter as the Zips entered halftime trailing 38-28.
Akron and Central Michigan both put up 14 points in the third quarter, keeping the deficit even at 52-42 entering the fourth. Akron played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
Akron came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on a 5-0 run, finished off by junior Liisa Taponen's (Tampere, Finland) layup, to shrink the deficit to 52-47 with 9:06 to go in the contest. Central Michigan responded and outscored the Zips the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 70-61. Akron took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 19 points in the paint.
