April 07 | Men's Basketball
AKRON, Ohio - Evan Mahaffey, a transfer from Ohio State, will join the Akron Zips men's basketball program for the 2025-26 season, head coach John Groce announced on Monday, April 7.
Â
"We are thrilled to add Evan to our program," said Groce. "Upon completion of the season, we felt we needed to add some size, versatility and skill to our perimeter. With Evan joining the program, we feel we accomplished that goal."
Â
Mahaffey, is the older brother of current Zip Eric Mahaffey and is a 6'6'' perimeter player from Cincinnati, Ohio, who played at Archbishop Moeller High School prior to stints with Penn State and Ohio State.
At Ohio State, he played in 68 games while starting 38 and averaged 20 minutes per game over the last two seasons. The incoming senior shot over 67 percent from the field last season, tallying 114 points, 98 rebounds, 28 blocks and 27 assists. As a true freshman, Mahaffey made 34 appearances for the Nittany Lions, including both NCAA Tournament games against Texas A&M and Texas.
Â
"He is a great teammate and plays the game the right way," said Groce. "Our staff can't wait to get him here and continue to compete for championships."
Â
Mahaffey was a consensus three-star prospect coming out of Cincinnati's Archbishop Moeller High School. As a senior at Moeller, he was a finalist for 2022 Ohio Mr. Basketball and was named the GCL Conference Player of the Year, the Ohio Player of the Year by Cincinnati.com and a Division I first-team All-Ohio honoree.
