Zips Pitching Records 15 Strikeouts; Matlon and Bowman Shine in 5-1 Win on Senior Day

AKRON, Ohio - The Akron pitching staff combined for 15 strikeouts while Caden Matlon and Max Bowman each racked up two extra base hits to help power the Akron Zips past the Mercyhurst Lakers 5-1 on Senior Day.
Jack Kelley (4-2) started on the mound and picked up the win for Akron (20-34). The right-hander went six innings, giving up one run on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out seven. Sean Flowers and Dawson Tourney each pitched an inning of scoreless relief with the pair striking out three batters each. Jacob Beall and Sean Perkins also allowed no runs in their appearances with each striking out one Laker.
Bowman's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-4 day, and included two doubles. Matlon made his contribution with a double, a triple and an RBI as part of a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Evan Bottone also helped out for the Zips, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Zips first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. A. Horvath came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron and get them on the board.
The score stayed at 1-1 until the sixth inning, when the Zips put runs on the scoreboard once again. Akron scored a run on an RBI triple off the bat of Matlon, scoring Bowman, which brought the Zips lead to 2-1.
Akron held Mercyhurst without a run before building their lead to 5-1 in the eighth inning. The score remained 5-1 for the rest of the game, as Akron coasted to the win.
