Akron Falls to Army to Conclude the Summit Hospitality Tournament

RALEIGH, NC -Â The Akron volleyball team could not overcome a dynamic Black Knights offense Saturday, falling to Army in three sets (20-25, 28-30, 22-25).
The non-conference loss moved Akron to 1-2 on the season.
Maureen Mathews and Vanessa Del Real were named to the Summit Hospitality Tournament All-Tournament Team.
Mathews finished with 16 kills on the day to lead the Zips' attack while finishing with a hitting percentage of .316. Defensively, Akron had two players reach double figures in digs as Del Real had 16 and Jaryn Morgan had 10. From the front row, Chidera Ozoh contributed a career-high six blocks. Martina Villani dished out 22 assists against the Black Knights.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Zips fell behind early, losing the first set 25-20. Akron trailed by as many as six points as Army grabbed the advantage for good at 16-15 in a set that was tied up three times before the Black Knights took over in the second half of the stanza.
SET 2 | Akron fell in the second set 30-28, digging a 2-0 hole in the match. The Zips fell in a tight second set, losing in a stanza that was tied eight times and had four lead changes.
SET 3 | Army finished the sweep with a third-set victory. The Zips came up short by the score of 25-22. Army grabbed the advantage for good at 17-16 in a set that was knotted up six times before the Black Knights took over in the second half of the stanza.
