October 17 | Football
Akron (1-6, 0-3 MAC) struck first behind quarterback Brayden Roggow, who directed an 11-play, 97-yard scoring march capped by a 6-yard touchdown pass to Marcel Williams with 5:18 remaining in the opening quarter.
Roggow completed 22 of 38 passes for 234 yards and a touchdown, connecting with seven differ-ent receivers. Miles Burris led the receiving corps with six catches for 54 yards, while Williams added six receptions for 42 yards and a score.
Defensively, Donelius Johnson paced the Zips with 10 tackles, including four solo stops, while Cyrus Durham registered 1.5 sacks and two tackles for loss. Rodrick Hunter added an interception as Akron held Miami to just 65 passing yards.
Miami (4-3, 2-1 MAC), however, rushed for 324 yards, led by Rodney Nelson's 142 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. The RedHawks also capitalized on four Akron interceptions, converting the turnovers into 21 points.
The Zips established an early rhythm after taking possession at their own 3-yard line following a Miami punt. Facing third-and-8, Roggow connected with Kyan Mason for 31 yards before finding Jean Louis III for a 49-yard gain on another third-down conversion.
The drive consumed six minutes and covered nearly the entire length of the field before Roggow found Williams for the game's opening touchdown and a 7-0 advantage.
Miami answered late in the first quarter after an interception gave the RedHawks possession at the Akron 26. Nelson capped the short drive with a 9-yard touchdown run to even the score at 7.
The RedHawks moved ahead in the second quarter on Kellan McLaughlin's 28-yard field goal before Caleb Heavner connected with Damarion Witten for a 27-yard touchdown with 1:16 remaining in the half, sending Miami into the locker room with a 17-7 advantage.
Akron opened the second half with another sustained possession, moving 42 yards on 12 plays and controlling the ball for 6:14. The drive reached the Miami 35 before a 53-yard field goal attempt came up short.
Miami extended its lead to 20-7 on McLaughlin's 24-yard field goal midway through the third quarter, then added a defensive touchdown when Blayne Myrick returned an interception 36 yards for a score.
The Zips responded immediately, taking advantage of favorable field position to put together a four-play, 28-yard scoring drive. Jordan Gant finished the possession with a 10-yard touchdown run, trimming the deficit to 27-14 with 49 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Miami answered early in the fourth when Nelson broke free for a 58-yard touchdown run to account for the final margin.
Gant finished with 46 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, while Kyan Mason contributed two receptions for 43 yards. Louis III added the Zips' longest offensive play of the afternoon with his 49-yard reception.
Akron finished with 315 yards of total offense and held the ball for 32:04, converting six third downs while limiting Miami to two conversions in nine opportunities.
The Zips also received a spark in the return game from Brandon Hills, who totaled 94 yards on two kickoff returns, including a 71-yard return.
Despite those contributions, Miami's rushing advantage and Akron's turnovers ultimately created a deficit the Zips could not overcome.
