Men's Soccer Set to Battle Syracuse in Major Nonconference Test
October 05 | Men's Soccer
AKRON, Ohio — The Akron men's soccer team will take a pause from BIG EAST competition and host Syracuse in a nonconference match on Tuesday, October 6 at 7 p.m.
The matchup marks the first time both teams have met since the 2018 NCAA Tournament, where the Zips defeated the Orange, 3-1, in the second round as part of their magical run to their second-ever College Cup final.
Akron (6-1-2) enters after having defeated DePaul, 2-0, in the Windy City last Friday. Remi Agunbiade scored both goals and was rewarded with BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors. He leads the squad with three goals on the year and is one of four Zips to score multiple goals on the year.
Syracuse (7-3-1) has had 12 different players score goals this season and received votes in the latest USC Coaches Poll. They are coming off a 1-1 tie against No. 10-ranked Pitt and defeated then No. 10-ranked Notre Dame, 1-0, the match prior. Pedro Gulli leads the Orange with four goals, and they have split time between Kyle Jansen and Juan Martinez-Bastidas in net this season. Syracuse is a former member of the BIG EAST and won the College Cup back in 2022.
Akron leads the all-time series, 3-1, and first met in 1987.
