Akron Defeats Cleveland State 3-1, Sweeps Season Series

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The University of Akron volleyball team earned its second consecutive victory on Friday evening, rallying past Cleveland State, 3-1, at Woodling Gym. Akron won the first set, 25-13, and went on to defeat Cleveland State 3-1, with set scores of 25-13, 21-25, 25-19, 25-23, to improve to 5-6 on the season.
Akron used a balanced offensive attack to overcome the early deficit, finishing the match with 47 kills and a .301 hitting percentage. The Zips also recorded 46 assists, 60 digs, 10 service aces and 10.0 total blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Cleveland State controlled the opening set, hitting .444 while Akron managed a .094 hitting percentage as the Vikings claimed a 25-13 victory.
The Zips answered in the second set, overcoming a competitive start to take a 25-21 win. Akron hit .222 in the frame and used a 17-kill offensive effort to even the match at 1-1.
Akron carried the momentum into the third set, building a lead and holding off the Vikings, 25-19. The Zips hit .286 in the frame while limiting Cleveland State to a .200 hitting percentage.
The fourth set featured 11 tie scores and two lead changes as both teams battled throughout. Akron closed strong, securing a 25-23 victory to complete the 3-1 comeback.
