AKRON, Ohio — The No. 17-ranked Akron men's soccer team suffered their first loss of the season, as they dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 5-ranked Georgetown.

In their first matchup since the BIG EAST semifinal in 2024, the Hoyas buried a penalty kick after a foul in the box in the 19th minute of the match to take an early 1-0 lead.

Just three minutes later, Georgetown took advantage of a costly Akron turnover near the top of the box and go ahead 2-0 where it would remain at the half.

Two minutes into the fresh period, Thomas O'Rourke found an open look from the top and struck the ball into the lower right corner to get the Zips on the board and pull within one.

Aiden Benitez had the best chance to tie it for Akron with seven minutes remaining, but his shot headed for the bottom corner of the net was saved by the Hoya goalkeeper.

Georgetown put the nail in the coffin on a fast break up the field in the 86th minute for their final goal of the match.

Akron outshot the Hoyas, 8-7, but six of Georgetown's shots were on goal. Brett Kaminski made three saves in net for the Zips.

"I thought the first 65 minutes of the game, we played quite well and, in some respects, as well as we've played all year," head coach Jared Embick said. "We had two mental breakdowns, and [Georgetown] punished us for that. We got back in the game early in the second half, and we just couldn't figure out how to keep momentum going at the end of the game to make a push."
