Hunter Julius was hired in October 2023 as an Associate Director of Communications after spending three-plus years at Lander University.Â
In his current role, he is responsible for the coverage and publicity of Voleyball, Men's basketball, Swimming and Diving and Baseball teams while serving as the secondary contact for Football.
While at Akron, Julius has helped promote 22Â weekly awards for the Zips.
The 2024-25 season saw additional coverage on the men's basketball team as it produced one of the best seasons in program history. Winning a program record 25 regular season games and 28 games in the 2024-25 season, Julius helped promote Nate Johnson as the MAC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year while head men's basketball coach John Groce was named the MAC Coach of the Year. Julius was on hand to assist with media coverage of the 2025 NCAA Tournament in Seattle, Wash., where the Zips battled Arizona at Climate Pledge Arena. 2024-25 also saw Julius on hand to help cover Abigail Daniel as she earned All-American status at the 2025 NCAA National Swimming and Diving Championships in Federal Way, Wash. He also successfully nominated Avery Book to the 2024 CSC Football Academic All-America Team.
During the 2023-24 season, he helped promote Enrique Freeman during his career defining season. Freeman was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year while also being named to the All-MAC First Team and All-Defensive Team along with being named an AP All-American and a top-five finalist for the Karl Malone Award. Freeman also became the first Zip to be drafted in the modern two-round NBA Draft formate in 2024. The Zips advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2022 where they battled Creighton at PPG Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Julius also assisted Birmingham-Southern at the 2024 Div. III World Series with photography duties, as the Panthers continued their Cinderella story in East Lake, Ohio. Julius worked with d3photography.com to assist in the coverage of the D3 World Series Championship series between Wisconsin-Whitewater and Misericordia. He also served as the team photographer for Bentley University at the 2023 Div. II Elite Eight Volleyball Tournament on the campus of Robert Morris in Moon Township, Pa.Â
At Lander he was responsible for the publicity and coverage of the women's rugby, men's soccer, men's basketball, wrestling, baseball and men's lacrosse teams. Julius also assisted with media efforts for the golf, cross country and women's tennis teams. During his time with the Bearcats, Julius nominated and/or promoted nine College Sports Communicators Academic All-Americans, four Conference Coach of the Year, seven Conference Players of the Year, seven Freshmen of the Year, and 53 weekly conference awards along with numerous All-Conference and Academic All-Conference selections. He also provided play-by-play support for men's basketball and baseball.
Julius handled all media responsibilities along with photography and graphic needs for the wrestling program as it made three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 2021-23. Zeth Brower became the first All-American and National Champion in program history in 2022 while the Bearcats finished as the National Runners-Up in 2023. He also handled all media responsibilities for the men's soccer team's conference tournament run and NCAA tournament appearance in the fall of 2022 that saw the Bearcats make the big dance for the first time since 2018. The Bearcats would advance to the second round of the Southeast Regional before falling to No. 1 Florida Tech in Pks.
2022-23 also saw an increase in external media coverage for the Bearcats. Julius helped pitch multiple stories to regional media, including increased coverage of the wrestling team throughout the season along with feature stories on Brandon Perkins of men's lacrosse team and his experience playing for Puerto Rico's U21 world team and Jess and Bailey Burt of the women's rugby team earning All-American status and playing to for USA Rugby against the Canadian national team in the summer of 2022. Julius also successfully nominated the first two College Sports Communicators Academic All-Americans for Lander since 1997, with Marshall Thompson and Roury Glanton being named All-Americans in the spring of 2021.
Outside his duties with the Bearcats, Julius served as one of the primary statisticians for the 2021 spring NJCAA Div. I & II Women's Soccer Championship at Blanchard Wood Parks in Evans, Ga. and assisted with stats for the 2023Â NJCAA Div. II Softball tournament in Duncan, S.C. He also became the primary photographer for the Spartanburgers inaugural season in the Coastal Plain League in the summer of 2021.
Julius joined the Bearcats after a stint at Lehigh University, where he served as the primary contact for women's basketball, tennis, cross country, track & field along with secondary duties for football. While with the Mountain Hawks, Julius assisted with the creation and publication of all pre and post-game stories, game notes, graphics and digital content for his assigned sports. He also served as the replay operator for home volleyball matches along with men's and women's soccer matches. Julius also assisted the athletic communications office with photography support for football, volleyball, men's and women's basketball and women's lacrosse
Before Lehigh, he served as the Media Relations Intern at Murray State University. While with the Racers he was tasked with coverage for cross country, women's soccer, women's track & field and women's tennis.  He assisted with filming the men's and women's basketball team to assist with creative video. While in Murray, he served as the official scorer for the 2017 OVC Women's soccer tournament and assisted media efforts for the 2018 NCAA Div. I Men's Basketball Regional in Nashville, Tenn. As the primary contact for the Racers' women's soccer team, Julius produced all game notes to be used by the media. He also helped nominated and promoted Harriet Withers as the 2017 OVC Women's Soccer Player of the Year. In total, Julius nominated 11 Racers to weekly awards.
Julius got his start in the sports information field serving as an intern at American International College during the 2016-17 academic year. While with the Yellow Jackets, he assisted with all of AIC's 21 varsity sports, ranging from football to lacrosse while handling broadcasting duties and stats for the Yellow Jackets baseball team along with assisting broadcasting efforts for the men's ice hockey, football, men's and women's basketball teams.
Julius has also traveled North America working with various summer collegiate baseball teams including the Falmouth Commodores (CCBL), Plymouth Pilgrims (NECBL), the Okotoks Dawgs (WCBL) and Spartanburgers (CPL).
A native of North Andover, Mass., Julius earned his bachelor's degree in Sports Journalism from Springfield College.
