AKRON, Ohio – Rachel Szymkowiak set a school record in the 200-yard breaststroke to highlight The University of Akron swimming and diving team's showing on Saturday in what was the final day of competition in the Mid-American Conference Championships at UA's Ocasek Natatorium.
Symkowiak clocked in at 2:18.30 (13th place) in the 200 breast, shaving down the school-best time of 2:19.46 she achieved in the morning prelim. That was the second program record to fall during the three-day league championships event, along with Catherine Carr's 4:20.09 in the 400-yard individual medley set on Friday.
On Saturday night, Carr also claimed an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:02.91.
Another highlight for the Zips came on the 3-meter diving board. Carla McNamara compiled a personal-best score of 315.70 in six dives to place fifth in the competition and post the second-best score in that event in program history. Leeanna Hoover finished in sixth with a score of 311.90.
Kelsea Cross improved upon the personal best she set in this morning's 200-yard backstroke prelims with a sixth-place time of 1:59.42 in tonight's final. That time ranks as the second best ever by a UA swimmer in the program record book. Becca Zimmer also represented UA in the 200 back final, coming in at 2:02.14 (14th place).
In the 100-yard freestyle, Meg Finnerty posted a 14th-place time of 51.30.
The Zips' 400-yard freestyle relay squad of Zimmer, Finnerty, Jessica Ickes and Taylor Hart closed out the event by placing second with a time 3:25.83. That is the second-best clocking in that event in team history.
Akron finished seventh in the team scoring with 287 points. Toledo was crowned champion with 635 points, followed by Ohio (612) and Miami (Ohio) (524).
