Akron Falls to Liberty and Auburn at Buccaneer Classic

JOHNSON CITY, TN -- After posting a season opening win over East Tennessee State on Friday, the Akron volleyball team fell in a pair of matches at the Buccaneer Classic to Liberty (3-1) and Auburn (3-0).
Match 1 - Akron 1, Liberty 3
The Akron volleyball team fell Saturday as the Liberty Lady Flames posted a 3-1 (23-25, 21-25, 25-14, 22-25) victory at the Brooks Gymnasium. The non-conference loss moved Akron to 1-1 on the season.
The Zips offense was paced by Chidera Ozoh, who finished with 15 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .571. Jordyn Aeschliman added 11 and Delaney Gash chipped in with 11 as part of balanced Akron attack. got 9 digs from Gash along with five blocks from Ozoh to lead them defensively.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Zips fell behind early, losing a close first set 25-23. Liberty grabbed the advantage for good at 1-0 in a set that was tied up three times before the Lady Flames took over the lead.
SET 2 | Akron fell in the second set 25-21, digging a 2-0 hole in the match. The Zips dropped the first point and never took the lead before dropping the set.
SET 3 | Akron rallied back to pull within two sets to one, winning their first set of the match in the third stanza. The Zips took the set 25-14 powered by a solid performance on the attacking side. Akron registered a .406 attack percentage with 16 kills in the set win. The Zips ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza. The Akron offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.
SET 4 | Akron couldn't build off the set-three victory and lost in the fourth set 25-22 to drop the match. The Zips trailed by as many as six points as Liberty grabbed the advantage for good at 22-21 and Akron was never able to recover in a set that was tied up 10 times before the Lady Flames took over in the second half of the stanza.
Match 2 - Akron 0, Auburn 3
The Akron volleyball team fell to the Auburn Tigers in three sets (16-25, 26-28, 15-25) Saturday at Brooks Gymnasium. The non-conference loss dropped Akron to 1-2 on the season.
The Zips were led by a double-double from Jessie Musselman, who registered 10 kills and 10 digs on the day. Lauren Wilson also added seven kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Vanessa Del Real chipped in for with 12 digs to go with two blocks from Jordyn Aeschliman.

SET 1 | The Zips fell behind early, dropping a tough first set 25-16. Akron trailed by as many as nine points as Auburn never surrendered the lead in a set that was tied up zero times before the Tigers took control.
SET 2 | Akron dropped set two 28-26, digging a 2-0 deficit in the match. The Zips fell in a back-and-forth set, losing in a stanza that featured four lead changes and was tied 14 times. Neither team led by more than four points along the way.
SET 3 | Akron could not win the third set and was swept by Auburn. The Zips dropped a tough set 25-15. Akron trailed by as many as 10 points as Auburn grabbed the advantage for good at 5-4 in a set that was tied up just once before the Tigers took over the lead.

The Zips are on the road for the Hampton Inn/ Indy Invitational hosted by IU Indy in Indianapolis, Ind. on Sept. 3-5. Akron opens the tournament on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. against MAC foe Ohio Bobcats. Â Akron followed by Marshall on Friday, Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. and IU Indy on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 3 p.m.
