Walk-Off Single Sends Seton Hall Past Akron
March 11 | Baseball
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The University of Akron baseball team was beaten, 3-2, by a Seton Hall walk-off single Sunday at North Charlotte Regional Park.
Alex Loftin had a good outing on the mound in his first start of the season. The senior righty went 6.0 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out seven. Danny Fawcett was handed the loss.
"Alex did a great pitching job today," first-year Akron coach Rick Rembielak said. "He was able to work ahead in the count and had excellent command."
Darius Washington hit a solo home run in the fifth to lead Akron (3-9) at the plate. Tyler Begun and Samuel Trecaso had two hits apiece.
"It was good to see Darius have a good day at the plate," Rembielak said. "He hit the ball hard twice and had the big home run. He's worked very hard and has really improved his swing."
Seton Hall held a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth, but Trecaso scored on a SHU error to tie the game. The Pirates threw the ball down the left field line trying to pick off Trecaso at third after he attempted to advance on a Brandon Winter ground out.
"We hung in there and stayed competitive," Rembielak said. "We did a good job to come back late and tie it up after being a run down."
The Pirates would open the bottom of the ninth with a double. Three at-bats later, a single drove in the game-winning run.
"Overall, we had a good effort today, but just came up a little short," Rembielak commented.
Akron will have Monday off before continuing its spring break trip with a two-game set at Jacksonville on Tuesday and Wednesday. Both games start at 6:30 p.m.
