Brown's Complete Game Moves Baseball Past Western Michigan in Game One
April 21 | Baseball
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Akron scored three runs in the top of the second and that was all senior ace Andrew Brown would need, as the righty tossed his fourth complete game in five MAC starts to lead UA to a 3-1 win over Western Michigan in Saturday's opener.
Brown (5-5) allowed just one unearned run and struck out six, while issuing no walks. He scattered nine hits and induced three double play balls.
Redshirt freshman Devan Ahart led UA at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Junior Samuel Trecaso and freshman Matt Rembielak also had multi-hit days. Junior Jared Turocy picked up the third Akron RBI.
Starter Casey Webber (2-3) took the loss for WMU, going seven innings and allowing three unearned runs. Ryan McMillin, Zach Thoma and Patrick Duncan all collected a pair of hits for the Broncos
UA jumped on top in the second after the inning was extended when WMU catcher Caleb Caton was issued a passed ball on a strike out pitch from Webber. Gerrad Rohan reached first on the play to put a pair on with two outs in the frame. Turocy then singled to center to drive in Trecaso in the next at-bat. After a Rembielak infield single loaded the bases, Ahart plated two with a single to left center.
Western Michigan mustered its only run in the bottom of the sixth. Brown quickly retired the first two batters of the inning, before Jack Scanlon reached on an error by Rembielak at short. Back-to-back singles by McMillin and Duncan pushed Scanlon across.
Brown was lights out the rest of the way. He sat down the Broncos in order in the seventh and allowed a meaningless single in both the eighth and ninth. It was the second complete game in a row for Brown, who has a 1.29 ERA and a .179 batting average against in five MAC starts this season. The Painesville, Ohio native is now fifth in UA history in career strikeouts.
