May 09 | Baseball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A sacrifice fly by Alan Filauro in the bottom of the 10th gave West Virginia a 4-3 win over The University of Akron baseball team at Hawley Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Akron had battled back to tie the game in the top of the ninth before the Mountaineers tallied the winning score.
Junior Samuel Trecaso (0-1) took the loss on the mound, allowing two runs in 3.2 innings out of the bullpen. Redshirt freshman Dan Becks put together a strong outing in his first career start. Becks allowed two runs on five hits in six innings.
Sophomore Tyler Begun went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead Akron (17-32). Redshirt freshman Devan Ahart and sophomore Darius Washington both tallied a pair of hits, while Ahart drove in two.
Bobby Boyd and Matt Frazer both had two hits for WVU (19-29). Ryan Tezak (2-1) recorded the final two outs in the top of the 10th to take the win.
Jared Turocy ripped a lead-off triple off the top of the right field wall, just missing a home run, but setting up the Zips to tie the game in the ninth. Begun then lined a single to left to knot the game at 3-3. Begun would move around to third on a sacrifice and a groundout, but was left there when Sam Watkins popped up to end the inning.
Billy Fleming and Chris Rasky singled and walked, respectively, to start the bottom of the 10th. After moving over on a sacrifice bunt, Fleming scored the winning run on Filauro's fly to right field.
Turocy drew a two-out walk to spark a rally in the top of the second. Begun followed with a base-hit to right, advancing Turocy to third. After Begun swiped second, Ahart lined a two-run single to right center to give Akron the lead.
Frazer tied the game up in the bottom of the third with a two-run homer to center. Boyd had doubled earlier in the inning.
The Mountaineers took the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Back-to-back, two-out walks by Trecaso, who was making his first career appearance on the mound, put runners in scoring position for John Polonius. Polonius then brought in Ryan McBroom with a grounder back up the middle that was just out of the reach of Begun at second.
Akron takes on Ohio this weekend in its final home series of the season. Action at Lee R. Jackson Baseball Field gets started on Friday at 3 p.m.
