MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of Akron (2-16) baseball team dropped both games in a doubleheader on Sunday against the University of Michigan (9-9) and Coastal Carolina University (10-10) in the final day of the Chanticleer Classic. Akron lost to Michigan in the first game at TicketReturn.com Field by a score of 3-2, and fell to Coastal Carolina by a score of 7-3 in the second game of the day.
Sophomore Pat Dyer was the starting pitcher for Akron against Michigan. Dyer had a no-decision in the loss, after pitching 5.0 innings with one earned run allowed and two strikeouts. This was Dyer's third start of the season.
Matt Rembielak and Devan Ahart each registered two base hits in the loss against Michigan. Rembielak finished the game with two hits and an RBI, while Ahart ended the game with a run scored and two hits.
Junior Bryan White tacked on his second RBI of the season in the fourth inning. White started at first base for Akron, and recorded three base hits in the loss.
"We gave up two runs in the first inning on no hits, and didn't cover first base by [Pat] Dyer on a potential inning ending double play," Head Coach Rick Rembielak said of the Michigan loss. "We came back to tie the game, which was a positive. [Zach] Beaver came in, and did a good job overall."
Tyler Begun, Brady Stewart and James Sheltrown recorded one base hit a piece in the first game on Sunday.
Game two in Sunday's doubleheader featured right-hander Jon Pusateri as the starting pitcher for UA. Pusateri lasted 1.1 innings pitched with four earned runs and four walks allowed. The junior's record dropped to 1-3 in the loss.
"Another rough start with his control for [Jon] Pusateri. We will continue to work with him so he can be consistent," Rembielak said Sunday. "He will be an important piece for us, and he'll get it together."
UA utilized five different pitchers in the second game of the day against Coastal Carolina. Andrew Fanning logged the most innings out of the bullpen, as he tossed 3.0 innings with two strikeouts and three earned runs allowed. Matt LaRocca, Joe Vazquez, Samuel Trecaso and Daulton Mosbarger all recorded scoreless appearances in the loss.
Offensively, Akron notched nine hits compared to Coastal Carolina's eight hits. Seven different Zips registered base hits in the second loss of the day.
"Two big innings hurt us, and as we struggle to score runs, we have to stay away from beating ourselves by giving up easy runs by putting extra base runners on," Rembielak said. "We outhit them, but gave them extra at-bats to score their runs."
LaRocca tallied two RBI in the loss to Coastal Carolina. The sophomore from Stony Brook, N.Y., had the most RBI during the game for the Akron squad. He is also the team leader for RBI this season with nine.
Ahart and Rembielak each notched their second, two-hit performance of the day in the game against Coastal Carolina. Ahart's second, two-hit game pushed his team leading hit total to 20. Rembielak has hit safely in eight of the past 10 Akron games.
"We had several guys with a good day at the plate, and looking to be more consistent with others," Head Coach Rembielak said of the offense. "We will continue to move forward, and work to get it all together."
Akron's next game will be at State College, Pa., against Penn State for a midweek game on Wednesday, which is set to begin at 6:05 p.m. Live stats are available through Penn State's athletic website.
