AKRON, Ohio – When the Akron Zips take the field today in a Homecoming match-up with Eastern Michigan, the squad will be making more than a fashion statement.
The Zips will unveil their all-black alternate uniforms today against the Eagles in the Mid-American Conference opener for both squads. The game will air on ESPN3, beginning at 2 p.m. ET.
The black uniforms, which feature gold lettering and shiny gold chrome helmets, were the brainchild of the late Alan "Tank" Arrington, Akron's former assistant head coach and offensive line coach. Arrington passed away in December 2013 following a car crash.
The uniforms feature a patch of a gold tank, just above the back nameplate, in honor of Arrington, who began working on the alternate uniforms before his passing.
Thanks to an Akron Football donor, the Zips were able to make the uniforms a reality this season.
Last week at Pittsburgh, the Zips unveiled the gold chrome helmets while wearing their all-white road uniforms.
