YPSILANTI, Mich. – The University of Akron swimming and diving team began competition at the 2015 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday night with the team of Ashley Niznik, Hannah Raspopovich, Erin Seiler and Susan Franz setting a new MAC record and posting Akron's second-straight MAC Championship time in the 200-yard medley relay at Jones Natatorium.
With their first-place finish, the Zips are in a three-way tie for first as Akron, Buffalo and Eastern Michigan each have 66 points. Bowling Green and Ohio are tied for fourth with 62 points.
The 200 medley relay team's first-place time of 1:38.59 eclipsed Akron's 2014 championship time by 1.10 seconds and bested the previous MAC record time of 1:39.68 set in 2011 by the Miami (Ohio) team of Thornton, Vehr, Roddenbery and Kete.
Franz, the freshman relay anchor, finished the relay strong by posting a 22.62 split in the 50 freestyle, the fastest time in program history. The previous program best was 22.72 set in 2009 by Stephanie Zielinksi.
In the second and final event of the night Laura Savariau, Ashley Drazkowski, Taylor Hart and Kara Kaulius combined for a sixth-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay at 7:21.92. Their time is now the third-fastest in Akron swimming and diving's history.
Additionally, during the 800 freestyle relay, Hart, a senior, contributed the fastest 200 freestyle time in program history at 1:47.09, besting Julia Gregos' time of 1:49.58 from 2010.
The Zips will continue competition tomorrow with five events. Preliminaries are set for 11 a.m. with the final session beginning at 7 p.m. at Eastern Michigan's Jones Natatorium.
