AKRON, Ohio – While sophomore starting pitcher Josh Davis twirled 6.0 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts on Tuesday, redshirt junior catcher Derek Carmichael led the Zips' offense with three RBI as the University of Akron baseball team blanked Marshall, 7-0, at Lee R. Jackson Field to pick up its sixth-straight win at home.
Akron (17-16) spread its seven runs across five different innings beginning with a two-run second. The Zips recorded three hits in the frame including RBI singles from Carmichael and redshirt senior infielder Matt LaRocca.
LaRocca led Akron in hits with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. LaRocca also crossed home twice for the Zips and registered an RBI.
Redshirt junior infielder Gerrad Rohan followed LaRoca with a 2-for-3 showing and three runs scored.
On the mound, three Zips pitchers combined to blank the Thundering Herd (11-24) starting with Davis (3-2) who made his third career start. In his 6.0 scoreless innings, Davis faced 22 batters and allowed just three hits to pick up the win. The right-hander walked one and fanned eight to come within one of his career-high strikeout mark.
Junior reliever Zach Beaver contributed 2.0 scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and striking out one. Redshirt sophomore Evan Jensen pitched the ninth and struck out two of the five batters he faced.
The Zips pitchers allowed a runner to advance into scoring position just three times as the pitching staff posted double-figures in strikeouts for the sixth time this season with 11.
On offense, following the two-run second inning, the Zips plated one run in the third, fourth and sixth innings courtesy of a Kris Simonton RBI double, a Carmichael sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk.
A two-run eighth inning featured Carmichael's second sacrifice fly of the day and an RBI single from redshirt senior outfielder Darius Washington to plate Akron's seventh and final run.
Overall, both teams posted errorless games while Akron out-hit Marshall 9-7.
The Zips face a quick turnaround as they travel to take on Dayton on Wednesday at Time Warner Cable Stadium for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
