Baseball Drops Series Finale at Ohio, 5-3

ATHENS, Ohio – The University of Akron baseball team held a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning but could not hang on as Ohio posted a four-run fifth on Sunday to defeat the Zips, 5-3, at Bob Wren Stadium.
Akron slipped to 19-22 overall and 9-9 in the Mid-American Conference. Ohio improved to 26-15 and 11-7 in league play with the three-game sweep.
Each team recorded seven hits in the contest. Akron was led by sophomore infielder Dom Iero who went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Junior outfielder Kris Simonton collected a pair of RBI on a two-run single in the top of the first that plated redshirt senior Joey Havrilak and junior Daulton Mosbarger for UA's 2-0 lead.
Simonton also scored the final run of the game, crossing on an Ohio error in the top of the sixth, cutting Akron's deficit to 5-3. The Zips ended the inning stranding three runners on base.
Defensively, senior Pat Dyer threw 3.0 scoreless innings of relief. The 6'9" left-hander allowed one hit and struck out one in his seventh appearance of the season.
Dyer took over on the mound for redshirt sophomore Evan Jensen who entered the game in a jam with Bobcats on the corners in the bottom of the fifth. Jensen picked up the third out for 0.1 innings pitched.
Redshirt senior starter Jon Pusateri (3-4) was tagged with the loss after turning in 4.2 innings, six hits and five runs, four earned. He walked two and struck out four.
Ohio scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the second when John Adryan singled home Tyler Wells for a 2-1 game.
The Bobcats struck again with four runs off three hits and an Akron error in the fifth to lead 5-2. Ohio scored the equalizing run on a bases-loaded walk and took the lead on a sacrifice fly.
Ohio's Jake Rudnicki (3-4) picked up the win after tossing 5.0 innings and allowing three hits and two runs.
The Zips return to action when they host Malone at Lee R. Jackson Field on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. Akron will then turn around for a second midweek match-up against Youngstown State in Youngstown, Ohio at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
