Women's Golf Fifth After Two Rounds at Mary Fossum Invitational

East Lansing, Mich. – The Akron Zips women's golf team finished the initial two rounds of the Mary Fossum Invitational ranked fifth overall with an opening round 305 and second round 304 scores for a 609 (+33) 36-hole total. Three Zips currently rank inside the Top 25, heading into tomorrow's final round at Forest Akers West Course.
"Consistency across the line up was key today, Zips' head coach Jenny King said. "I thought everyone handled themselves well mentally and executed their game plans. When we play relaxed, we play solid golf. We just have to continue the momentum tomorrow and finish strong."
Sophomore Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio) leads the Zips after improving by three strokes during the second round. She completed the first 18-hole segment with a 77 (+5) score on 10 pars, two birdies, and seven bogeys. The reining Mid-American Conference champion cut three strokes during the second 18-holes for a 74 (+2) with nine pars, three birdies, and five bogeys. Nicholson is currently tied for 17th on the leaderboard with a 151 (+7) 36-hole total.
Sophomore Makayla Dull (Fremont, Ohio) and freshman Allyson Wentworth (Stewartsville, N.J.) trailed Nicholson by one stroke after two rounds, finishing the 36 holes with a 152 (+8) tally and tied for 22nd overall. Dull used rounds of 77 (+5) and 75 (+3) with 21 pars, three birdies, five bogey and a double bogey. Wentworth carded a pair of 76 (+4) while using 12 pars, a birdie and five bogeys in the opening round followed by nine pars, an eagle, and a birdie coupled with seven bogeys.
Senior Alejandra Velasco-Villanueva (Guadalajara, Mexico) and junior Pader Her (Holt, Mich.) rounded out the scoring with 155 (+11) and 156 (+12) scores, respectively, for 33rd and 40th place finishes. Velasco-Villanueva recorded rounds of 75 (+3) and 80 (+8) while Her notched rounds of 77 (+5) and 79 (+7).
The University of Miami holds a convincing 30-stroke lead after 36 holes, finishing with a 569 (-7) two-round team total. Princeton follows in second with a 599 (+23), while Indiana and Michigan State are tied at third with 603 (+27) tallies.
