Nicholson Runner-Up, Zips Finish Fourth at Colonel Classic

Richmond, Ky. – Junior Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio) led the Akron Zips women's golf team to a fourth-place finish 597 (+21) while earning runner-up at the Colonel Classic on Saturday.

Due to weather conditions, the Colonel Classic was shortened to a 36-hole tournament at the University Club in Arlington, a par-72 course the stretches 5,815 yards. The Zips fired rounds of 298 (+10) and 299 (+11).

Nicholson entered Saturday's final round ranked fourth overall with a 1-over 73 ledger, and turned in a 1-under 71 scorecard after the final round of play. Nicholson ascended to the top of the individual leaderboard even-par 144 performance, forcing a playoff for medalist honors. Â

Western Kentucky's Mary Joiner won the playoff with a birdie on the par-4, 347-yard hole No. 10 to earn medalist honors. Nicholson recorded 11 pars and four birdies during the final round of play to bring her tournament total to 22 pars and seven birdies.

A trio of Zips followed in scoring as freshman Abbie Pearce (Green, Ohio), sophomore Allyson Wentworth (Stewartsville, N.J.), freshman Jacinta Pikunas (Youngstown, Ohio) all placed 15th overall with 151 (+7) totals. Pearce fired a final round 75 (+3) to climb seven spots on the leaderboard, while Wentworth maintained her position among the field with a 76 (+4). Pikunas carded a 77 (+5) score.

Senior Pader Her (Holt, Mich.) rounded out the team scoring with a 35th place 155 (+11) tournament total. In addition, junior Makayla Dull (Fremont, Ohio) and senior Mallory Etcheberry (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) competed as individuals, earning scores of 162 (+18) and 163 (+19), respectively.

Xavier won the team title in a playoff against host Eastern Kentucky. Both squads finished with 595 (+19) team tallies. Xavier won the playoff with two birdies and two pars on hole No. 10.

The Zips will be back in action on Saturday and Sunday, April 7-8 at the Dolores Black Falcon Invite hosted by Bowling Green at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green, Ohio.
