Volleyball Set to Play in Wake Forest Invitational

THIS WEEK
The Zips continue tournament play this weekend as they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to compete in the Wake Forest Invitational, Sept. 7-8.
On Friday, Akron faces Georgia Southern at 7 p.m. The Zips will wrap up the tournament on Saturday with a doubleheader against Elon at 1:30 p.m. and Wake Forest at 7:30 p.m.
Sophomore Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) leads the Zips' offense with 76 kills, while senior Kayla Gwozdz (Temperance, Mich.) tallies 72 kills. Middle Blocker Ashley Richardson (Doylestown, Ohio) holds team-bests in hitting percentage (.407) and blocks (14). Additionally, Richardson and sophomore Shelby Fulmer (Perrysburg, Ohio) were named to Akron Invitational All-Tournament team.
Sophomore setter Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) is averaging 7.43 assists per set, while also leading the Zips with 12 service aces. Sophomore defensive specialist Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) leads the defense with 133 digs.
The Zips are under the direction of fourth-year head coach Tom Hanna who has a career record of 165-199, 26-65 at Akron.
SCOUTING GEORGIA SOUTHERN
The Eagles, under the direction of sixth-year head coach Dustin Wood, stand 1-6 after two weekends of action. Most recently, Georgia Southern fell to both Arkansas and Minnesota, 3-0, before defeating North Dakota State in straight sets at the Diet Coke Classic hosted by Minnesota. On Sept. 4, the Eagles fell in a non-conference match to North Florida, 3-1.
The Eagles are led on offense by junior Carly Turner, who is averaging 2.30 kills per set. Defensive specialist Joscelin Morrow leads the back-row defense for Georgia Southern with 88 digs, while Brooke Birch has a total of 52 digs. Sophomore Lauren Hager holds a team-best 30 total blocks.
SERIES VS. GEORGIA SOUTHERN
The match on Friday will be the first meeting between the Eagles and the Zips.
SCOUTING ELON
The Phoenix are 7-0 heading into the Wake Forest Invitational. Last weekend, Elon hosted the Phoenix Classic where it picked up wins over Evansville (3-1), North Carolina Central (3-0) and Gardner-Webb (3-1).
Outside hitter Kam Terry lead the offensive efforts for the Phoenix with 83 kills. A pair of right side hitters in Leah Daniel and Kellyn Trowse have totals of 54 and 51 kills, respectively. Junior Elizabeth Coil owns a team-high 23 total blocks, while senior Alexa Pavlick has made 22 blocks. Senior defensive specialist Maddie Jaudon leads the Phoenix with 132 digs.
SERIES VS. ELON
The Zips lead the all-time series over Elon, 1-0. Akron defeated the Phoenix, 3-0 (30-14, 30-22, 30-24) on Sept. 2, 2005 in the only meeting between the teams prior to this weekend.
SCOUTING WAKE FOREST
Wake Forest is 0-6 early this season. Last weekend, the Deacons fell to Santa Clara (3-1), Nebraska (3-0) and Ohio (3-0) at the Ameritas Players Challenge hosted by Nebraska.
Junior Caitlyn Della leads the Demon Deacons with 45 kills, while outside hitter Caroline Rassenfoss has recorded 43 kills. Setter Madeline Holt has dished out 178 assists for. On defense, senior libero Hailey McFadden holds a team-best 86 digs, while sophomore Olivia Saunders leads with 16 total blocks.

This weekend will be the first meeting between the Zips and Demon Deacons.
LAST WEEK
The Zips went 2-1 for the second straight weekend as they hosted the Akron Invitational. Akron fell to Maryland, 3-0 (22-25, 22-25, 22-25), before sweeping both Canisius (25-23, 25-21, 25-21) and Stony Brook (26-24, 25-23, 25-19).
UP NEXT FOR AKRON
Akron returns home to host the Zips Invitational, Sept. 14-15. UA battles Bucknell on Friday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. The Zips will take on Iona and Youngstown State on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
