Akron, Ohio – The University of Akron women's golf squad enters their first team tournament of the spring season at the Rio Verde Invitational as senior Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio) eyes her third consecutive Rio Verde Individual Championship on Friday-Sunday, Feb. 22-24.
The three-day, 54-hole event is hosted by Western Michigan at the Rio Verde Country Club's Quail Run course, a par-72 Quail Run course stretches 6,128 yards in Rio Verde, Ariz.
On Thursday, Feb. 21, the Zips will learn the lay of the land during their practice round which begins at 1 p.m. The following day, Friday, Feb. 22, Akron is scheduled to begin the 54-hole event as tee time and starting positions will be released on Thursday evening.
"We are about to face record-breaking low temperatures here in Arizona over the course of the next three days," head coach Jenny King said. "We have been anticipating the weather for quite some time now and we feel like we are mentally ready for the challenge.
The Tournament's 18-team field includes host Western Michigan, Akron, Arkansas State, Ball State, Bowling Green, Boise State, Bradley, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Illinois State, Little Rock, UMKC, Missouri State, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Seton Hall, Wichita State, and Xavier.
The Akron women's golf team enters the Rio Verde Invitational after a successful Fall season and placing third overall at the MAC Match Play Challenge. Nicholson went 2-0-1 in the spring opener and looks to defend back-to-back individual tournament wins at Rio Verde. This season, Nicholson sports a 75.5 stroke average and made three Top 25 finishes in four events which included two ninth place showings.
Akron's starting five includes Nicholson, senior Makayla Dull (Fremont, Ohio), junior Allyson Wentworth (Stewartsville, N.J.), sophomore Abbie Pearce (Green, Ohio) and freshman Ivana Shah (Mumbai, India).
Pearce follows Nicholson with a second-best 77.83 stroke average and one Top 25 performance, while Shah recorded a 78.25 fall stroke average and fired a career-best 17th place showing in her second collegiate appearance. Wentworth finished the first half of the season with a 78.42 and Dull carded a 79.92. Both Wentworth and Dull achieved Top 25 finishes in the Fall at 12th and 23rd, respectively.
"Today, our practice round today was played in rain, wind and cold, not the elements we are used to in Arizona, but it will prepare us perfectly for what is to come," King said.
Last season, the Akron women's golf team finished runner-up with a 903 (+39) tournament total, while Nicholson claimed her second-straight Rio Verde individual title with a 214 (-2) total and teammate Jacinta Pikunas (Youngstown, Ohio) claimed individual runner-up honors with a 220 (+4) score.
