MAC Championships: Akron Finishes Sixth, Shah Lands in Top 15

Naperville, Ind. – The Akron Zips women's golf team finished sixth overall at the 2019 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championships while freshman Ivana Shah (Mumbai, India) landed in the Top 15 on Sunday.

Due to course conditions on Saturday, the season finale was shortened to a two-day window to complete the 54-holes, forcing the teams to play a pair of 18-hole rounds on championship Sunday. Akron fired 308 (+20) and 299 (+11) team scores en route to a 924 (+60) tournament total.

Shah led Akron's scoring efforts with a pair of 1-over par 73 scores after opening with a 78 (+6) tally. She carded a 224 (+8) tournament total at her first MAC Championships event which was good enough to be tied at 11th overall. For the tournament, Shah recorded 40 par scores with three birdies and 11 bogeys, including back-to-back 18-hole performances of 15 pars, two bogeys and one birdie.

Seniors Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio) and Makayla Dull (Fremont, Ohio) both finished in the Top 30 in their final MAC Championship appearances. Nicholson posted rounds of 81 (+9) and 79 (+7) before ending her collegiate career with a 74 (+2) for a 234 (+18) 54-hole tournament total. Before the final 36-holes started Nicholson was named second-team All-MAC. Dull carded a second-consecutive 235 (+19) tournament total to wrap-up her career. She posted a pair of 78 (+6) scores and a final round 79 (+7) ledger.

Sophomore Abbie Pearce (Green, Ohio) and junior Allyson Wentworth (Stewartsville, N.J.) rounded out the Zips' scoring with 239 (+23) and 241 (+25) totals, respectively. Pearce used scores of 80 (+8), 78 (+6) and 81 (+9) to finish tied for 35th, while Wentworth recorded a pair of 84 (+12) tallies before ending the event with a 1-over par 73 performance.

Kent State earned their 20th consecutive team title with an 857 (-7) score, while the Flashes' Karoline Stormo won medalist honors (-5, 76-65-70 – 211).In addition, Stormo set the MAC single-round tournament record with a 65 (-7) second-round performance.

With the win, Kent State picked-up one point for the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge. The Zips and the Golden Flashes are now tied at 5.5 points apiece with three events remaining, including men's golf, men's and women's outdoor track & field.
