COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Akron Zips scored the first touchdown of the game at Ohio Stadium, but could not overcome 38 unanswered points in the first half as No. 10 ranked Ohio State defeated Akron 59-7 on Saturday evening.

Akron touched the scoreboard first as redshirt sophomore QB DJ Irons (Lawrenceville, Ga.) drove the Zips down the field with a nine-play, 55-yard scoring drive. Irons sparked the drive with a 16-yard run for a first down. He completed 4-of-5 passes with the final two passes targeting freshman WR Konata Mumpfield (Hoschton, Ga.). Mumpfield caught a 17-yard pass for a first down on the OSU four yardline, and on the next play, Irons hit Mumpfield again for the touchdown.

Irons finished the game with 115 yards in the air and 17 yards on the ground, while Mumpfield averaged 9.6 yards per reception, hauling in a team best seven catches for 67 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Akron posted two sacks and a takeaway as redshirt junior S Jaylen Kelly-Powell (Detroit, Mich.) and sophomore DL Ryan Johnson (Starkville, Miss.) recorded the sacks with eight and seven yards of loss, respectively. Kelly-Powell finished the game with a second-best five tackles, while redshirt junior LB Bubba Arslanian (Aurora, Ohio) and junior LB Brandon Bischof (Akron, Ohio) led the team in takedowns with six total tackles apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Akron Zips started the scoring as DJ Irons hit Konata Mumpfield for back-to-back passes. Mumpfield caught a 17-yard pass that setup a four-yard TD reception. The 9-play, 55-yard scoring drive lasted 4:04. Zips held a 7-0 lead with 7:27 left in the first quarter.
- Ohio State scored 38 unanswered points to close out the first half.
- The Buckeyes scored two touchdowns in the first quarter with a six-play, 75-yard drive that lasted 2:00 at the 5:27 mark (7-7) and a three-play, 73-yard drive that lasted 0:57 with 11-seconds on the clock (14-7).
- In the second quarter, OSU scored three additional touchdowns and added a field goal. The Buckeyes used a 10-play, 70-yard drive for the first score, lasting 4:22 at the 10:23 mark (21-7) and a three-play, 40-yard drive taking 1:01 off the clock (28-7).
- The third touchdown was an interception returned 46 yards by OSU's Ronnie Hickman (35-7), and the Buckeyes ended the half with a 32-yard field goal (38-7).
- In the third quarter, OSU added two touchdown drives, the first two plays for 87 yards (45-7) and an eight-play, 85-yard drive (52-7).
- Ohio State added the final score of the game with 2:47 left on the game clock. The drive was 10 plays for 75 yards in 4:12 (59-7).
Akron opens Mid-American Conference play hosting Ohio in a 3:30 p.m. contest on Saturday, Oct. 2 at InfoCision Stadium - Summa Field.
