Akron, Ohio – The University of Akron women's golf squad enters their first team tournament of the spring season at the Rio Verde Invitational on Friday-Sunday, Feb. 25-27.

The three-day, 54-hole event is hosted by Western Michigan at the Rio Verde Country Club's White Wing Golf Course, a par-72 that stretches 6,242 yards.

On Thursday, Feb. 24, the Zips learned the lay of the land during their practice round at 1 p.m. On Friday, Feb. 25, Akron is scheduled to begin the 54-hole event on holes 7-9 at 1 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 26) and Sunday (Feb. 27) are scheduled for 18-holes of play each day with tee times TBA.

The Tournament's 18-team field includes host Western Michigan (host), Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Bradley, Butler, California Baptist, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Illinois State, Kennesaw State, Loyola (Ill.), Missouri State, Oakland, Ohio, South Dakota, Wichita State and Xavier.
The Zips enter their first spring tournament of the season after a successful fall campaign, posting back-to-back tournament wins for the second time in program history and added third- and ninth-place finishes. Akron opened spring with the Match Play Challenge.

The starting five of sophomore Jennifer David (Hudson, Ohio), sophomore Jessica Hahn (Canton, Ohio), junior Jacinta Pikunas (Youngstown, Ohio) Â junior Ivana Shah (Mumbai, India) and sophomore Riley Dean (Lewis Center, Ohio) at the Par-72, 6,242-Yard course.
In 2020 before the COVID-19 shutdown, the Akron women's golf team finished fifth overall with a 309-302-297 - 908 (+44) tournament total. Pikunas fired a 2-over par 73-71-74 – 218 tournament total for a third-place finish, while Shah placed 18th overall with 76-76-73 – 225 (+9) scores. Rounding out Akron's scoring were David, Dean and Hahn. David finished tied for 34th place (+14, 230), Dean landed tied in the 50th position (+19, 235) and Hahn placed 82nd (+29, 245).

After a hiatus due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Rio Verde Invitational returns for its 19th year. Originally known as the East/West Rio Verde Invitational, host Western Michigan University, from Kalamazoo, Mich., won the inaugural invitational in the spring of 2003 with a score of 614. The event moved from a 36-hole to a 54-hole format in 2005. This year's tournament returns to the White Wing Course, where it was last held in 2020.
