Akron Swim and Dive Finishes Third at Tim Welsh Classic

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron swimming and diving team finished third overall with 749 points at the 2023 Tim Welsh Classic hosted by Notre Dame at Rolfs Aquatic Center on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 27-28.
Senior Weronika Gorecka (Wroclaw, Poland) captured the Zips lone gold medal in the 200 yard freestyle, clocking a 1:48.11 time. Akron added a silver medal finish and three bronze medals as sophomore Abigail Daniel (Bristow, Va.) stopped the timer at 1:59.06 in the 200 yard individual medley. Junior Madelyn Gatrall (Windsor, Ontario) secured the Zips final individual medal, placing third in the 100 yard backstroke with a 52.53 time.
Akron collected a pair of third place finishes in the 200 and 800 yard freestyle relays. Daniel led-off the 200 free relay with a 22.03 time followed by Gatrall (22.36), sophomore Rebecca Reid (22.77) and senior Rachel Schiffli (22.46) for a 1:30.62 time. Reid started the 800 free relay with a 1:50.23 followed by Gatrall (1:49.79), Gorecka (1:48.71) and junior Astrid Halvorsen (1:50.79) to finish 7:19.61 time.
Senior Paige Kalik (Irwin, Pa.) led the Akron divers, placing sixth and seventh on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards with 277.60 and 280.60 points, respectively.
Ohio State placed first overall with 1,803 points while runner-up Notre Dame secured 884 points.
Next up for Akron in the Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 22-25 in Oxford, Ohio.
