MAC Championships: Zips Sweep Day 1, Two Events, Two Championships, One Pool Record

OXFORD, Ohio – Akron swimming and diving opened the 2023 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships a pair of gold medal performances and a pool record as Miami hosts at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.
Opening night featured two championship events and the Zips won both. Akron opened the league finale with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, flying to a 1:36.96 time as junior Madelyn Gatrall (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) led-off with a 24.27 backstroke time followed by a 27.48 breaststroke by senior Andrea Fischer (Oak Grove, Minn.), 22.85 butterfly leg from sophomore Abigail Daniel (Bristow, Va.), while senior Rachel Schiffli (Indianapolis, Ind.) brought it home with a 22.36 time for Akron's first win.

The Zips followed with a pool record setting performance in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:09.00) as Gatrall was the lead with a 1:47.01 time, sophomore Rebecca Reid (Donaghadee, United Kingdom) posted a 1:47.96, senior Weronika Gorecka (Wroclaw, Poland) added a 1:45.00 and junior Astrid Halvorsen (Stroemmen, Norway) stopped the timer with a 1:49.03 time.

The MAC season finale continues on Thursday, Feb. 23 with prelims at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6:00 p.m. Fans can follow the action on ESPN+ or via live results on GoZips.com
