CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Akron swimming and diving team concluded three days of competition at the Magnus Cup Invitational at Cleveland State University on Saturday evening. The Zips won the women's event after scoring 1571 points and broke seven meet records in the process, including three more on Saturday.Â
After the morning prelims, the Akron divers took center stage in the platform event. Laurel Smith took second place with a total of 194 points.
The evening swim finals began with the Zips sweeping the 100 yard Individual Medley. Abigail Daniel broke her third individual meet record with a 54.21 time. Teammates Rebecca Reid and Madelyn Gatrall were the second and third place finishers. Daniel got her second win in the same number of events when she finished at 24.09 in the 50 yard Butterfly. Akron continued the first place trend with Weronika Gorecka's first place finish in the 200 yard Backstroke when she touched the wall two seconds before the next competitor.Â
In the 200 yard Breaststroke, Sara Bozso finished second followed by her teammate Madeline Dyer at 2:17.37. Gatrall then broke another meet record in the 50 yard Backstroke, breaking not only the record from the 2017 record in the prelims, but then she improved on her time in the finals to set the new record at 24.82. Reid came in right behind her at 25.17 for a second place finish.Â
Akron concluded the meet with another relay meet record for the relay team of Rebecca Reid, Weronika Gorecka, Madelyn Gatrall, and Abigail Daniel in the 400 Freestyle Relay. However, it also was a pool record for the Busbey Natatorium, breaking the old record by over a second.Â
