Zips on Top After Day One of Zippy Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips opened the 2023 Zippy Invitational with a pair of gold and silver medal performances for a 34-point advantage over the seven-team field on Thursday at the Ocasek Natatorium.
Akron swept first and second in the 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay, while UC Santa Barbra and Cornell followed with third and fourth place showings in both races.
The Zips' team of Madelyn Gatrall (24.74), Madeline Dyer (27.55), Abigail Daniel (22.94) and Rebecca Reid (22.54) captured the first gold medal with a 1:37.77 time, while Weronika Gorecka (24.77), Sara Bozso (27.97), Rachel Sabotin (24.37) and Aislinn Holder (22.87) claimed silver.
In the 800 Free Relay, the gold medal team flew to a 7:12.22, which was only 0.02 away from setting the pool record set in 2018. Reid led-off with her fastest time, clocking a 1:47.90 and Gatrall followed with a 1:48.72, Daniel posted a 1:48.55 and Gorecka finished the relay with a 1:47.05.
Akron's runner-up 800 Free Relay squad registered a 7:20.99 time as Astrid Halvorsen (1:50.29), Sabotin (1:49.90), Elle Couture (1:50.46) and Kaja Reinhardt (1:50.34) combined for the silver medal.
Akron will be back in action tomorrow morning for Day 2 Prelims beginning at 9am.
