Akron Sets Two Meet Records, Increases Lead at Zippy Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron swimming and diving program increased their lead by 177 points at the 2023 Zippy Invitational as the Zips broke two meet records with Abigail Daniel being part of both new standards on Friday evening at Ocasek Natatorium.
The Zips opened the evening with a silver medal showing from Elle Couture, who went 4:52.42 in the 500-yard freestyle
Akron claimed the top four spots in the 200-yard individual medley as Daniel flew to a new meet record, flying to a 1:56.78 time and replacing the 1:57.33 mark set in 2022 by Oakland's Susan LaGrand. Following in second, third and fourth were Weronika Gorecka (1:58.40), Rebecca Reid (1:58.54) and Rachel Sabotin (1:59.75), respectively.
Daniel followed with a gold medal performance in the 50-yard freestyle, stopping the timer at 22.73, while teammate Madelyn Gatrall placed third with a 23.08 time.
Akron continued to swim fast, breaking a second meet record in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Gatrall (52.56), Madeline Dyer (1:01.39), Daniel (51.49) and Reid (48.78) flew to a 3:34.22 time, resetting the 3:34.83 meet record set in 2017 by Akron's Madison Myers, Paloma Marrero, Paulina Nogaj and Sadie Fazekas.
On the men's side, Oakland's Jonas Cantrell set a new pool and meet record with a 4:18.47 time in the 500-yard freestyle, replacing the old mark set in 2021 by William Kamps from Penn.
Akron will be back in action Saturday morning for day three prelims beginning at 9am.
