No. 25 Swimming and Diving Leads After the First Day of the Zips Classic

AKRON, Ohio - The No. 25 Akron Swimming and Diving team took a commanding lead after the first day of the Akron Zips Classic.
Akron, who leads with 459 points, is trailed by Youngstown State (255 points), Xavier University (209 points) and Denison University (168 points).
The Zips began the day by making a splash in the one-meter dive with the top three scores belonging to the Blue and Gold. Elizabeth Noble took first with a score of 274.65 while Laurel Smith finished second with a score of 263.45 and Paige Bush took third with a score of 261.20.
Akron then took the top two spots in the 400-yard medley relay. The Zips "Z" squad of Madelyn Gatrall, Claire Cox, Abigail Daniel and Ada Szwabinska finished first with a time of 3:37.41 while the "I" team of Rebecca Reid, Madelyn Bosler, Aislinn Holder and Felicia Klintemar finished at 3:41.79.
The 500-yard freestyle saw Elle Couture place fourth with a time of 5:01.23 while Daniel would set a new meet record in the 200-yard IM after finishing first with a time of 1:59.85. She beat teammate Rebecca Reid's time of 2:00.15 set in 2023.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Akron took nine of the top-10 spots. Szwabinska paced the Zips with a time of 22.98, good for second. Abby Daniel finished third with a time of 22.99 for third. Olivia Oyster of Xavier finished first and set a meet record with a time of 22.69. Oyster's time beat the previous record, 22.81, set by Akron's Sarah Watson in 2021.
Akron capped off the first day of competition with the top two times in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The "Z" team of Klintemar, Reid, Daniel and Gatrall finished with a time of 7:22.22 for first place. The Zips "I" team of Julia Mauter, Couture, Helena Lalkovic and Brienne Trumpower finished with a timer of 7:34.16 for second place.
On the men's side, Patrick Adams of Youngstown State set a meet record with a score of 279.90 in the three-meter dive as he bested YSU's Cody Thill's score of 251.25 set in 2021.
Xavier's men's "A" squad of Matt Fralic, Ethan Saunders, Aiden Leamer and Kyle Hudson set a meet record in the 400-yard medley with a time of 3:16.91, beating the previous mark of 3:18.12 held by Miami (OH) set in 2019.
The Zips Classic concludes tomorrow, October 12 with the first events set to begin at 10 a.m.
