No. 25 Swimming and Diving Concludes Action at the Zips Classic in First Place

AKRON, Ohio - The No. 25 Akron swimming and diving team concluded action at the Zips Classic with a first-place victory.
The Zips finished first with 1345 points while Xavier University finished second with 832 points, Youngstown State finished third with 762 points and Denison University finished fourth with 517.
Akron started the second day of competition claiming the top three times in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Zips "Z" squad of Ada Szwabinska, Abigail Daniel, Rebecca Reid and Aislinn Holder finished first with a time of 1:31.71, the Zips "I" squad of Brienne Trumpower, Madelyn Gatrall, Hannah Trainer and Callie Parkes finished second with a time of 1:32.63 while the Zips "P" squad of Dominika Kossakowska, Felicia Klintemar, Julia Mauter and Helena Lalkovic finished third with a time of 1:35.21.
Kendall Craig then took first in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:26.77 before the Zips would take six of the top 10 times in the 100-yard Butterfly. Daniel took first with a time of 53.69 and Klintemar finished third with a time of 55.49.
The 200-yard Freestyle saw three Zips place in the top four. Kossakowska finished first with a time of 1:49.29, Elle Couture finished third with a time of 1:51.95 and Lalkovic finished fourth with a time of 1:52.01.
Claire Cox and Madelyn Bosler finished second and third in the 100-yard Breaststroke with times of 1:02.34 and 1:02.49. Jordyn Libler of Xavier set a new meet record with the top time of 1:01.49, beating Akron's Paula Garcia's time of 1:02.34 set in 2019.
Akron swept the top three spots in the 100-yard Backstroke as Gatrall finished first with a time of 53.49, Reid finished second with a time of 55.16 and Mauter placed third with a time of 56.17.
The Zips took second and third in the three-meter dive, as Paige Bush placed second with a score of 267.40 and Laurel Smith placed third with a time of 261.45.
Akron claimed the top three times in the 200-yard medley relay. The Zips "Z" team of Gatrall, Cox, Daniel and Holder finished first with a time of 1:39.49, while the Zips "I" squad of Reid, Bosler, Trainer and Szwabinska finished second with a time of 1:42.28 and the Zips "P" squad of Mauter, Craig, Kossakowska and Parkes finished third with a time of 1:43.45.
Couture finished fifth in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:18.03 while the Blue and Gold would take the top three spots in the 200-yard Backstroke. Gatrall placed first with a time of 1:57.14, Reid finished second with a time of 2:01.71 and Mauter finished third with a time of 2:03.26
The 100-yard Freestyle featured the Zips taking eight of the top 10 times which was highlighted by Kossakowska finishing second with a time of 50.11 and Daniel finishing third with a time of 50.18.
Akron would once again take two of the top times as Bosler finished second in the 200-yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:14.66 and Cox finished third with a time of 2:19.35.
Kossakowska, Trainer and Addy Soehnlen finished in second, third and fourth in the 200-yard Butterfly with times of 2:02.27, 2:04.23 and 2:04.82 respectively.
The 400-Yard Freestyle Relay featured the Blue and Gold claiming the top three times. The "Z" squad of Szwabinska, Daniel, Gatrall and Kossakowska finished first with a time of 3:20.80, the "I" squad of Mauter, Klintemar, Reid and Holder finished second with a time of 3:22.55 and the "P" squad of Lalkovic, Trumpower, Parkes and Trainer finished third with a time of 3:25.64.
On the men's side, Ethan Saunders of Xavier set a meet record in the 100-yard Breaststroke with a time of 54.62. The previous top time of 55.48 was set by Noah Barr of Miami (OH) in 2019.
Brendan Stanley of Denison set a meet record in the one-meter dive after scoring 272.30 points. The previous record was set by Kristian Kowalski, also from Denison, who scored 263.25 points in 2023.
Xavier's "A" squad set a meet record in the 200-yard medley relay. Gage Hannewyk, Saunders, Aiden Leamer and Kyle Hudson swam a time of 1:30.06, beating the previous time of 1:30.07 set by Miami (OH) in 2019.
James Slessor of Youngstown State set a meet record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:00.36. The previous record was a time of 2:00.52 set by Richie Kurlich of Denison in 2019.
Youngstown State also set a meet record in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay. The Penguins "A" team of Lorenz Beck, Darren Laing, Gavin Redden and Jacob Gramer finished first with a time of 3:00.56 to best the previous record of 3:00.87 set by Miami (OH) in 2019.
Akron hits the road next as it travels to Columbus, Ohio., to face Ohio State and Kentucky on October 19. Action is set to begin at 1 p.m.
