Zips Fall to Western Michigan

AKRON, Ohio - The Akron volleyball team fell to the Western Michigan Broncos in four sets (20-25, 25-20, 15-25, 22-25) Thursday at home at James A Rhodes Arena.
The Zips offense was paced by Lauren Baker, who finished with 19 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .319. Gabby Brissett added 12, Ellen Kinnaird and Karleighana Jones chipped in with 11 as part of a Akron attack that had four players with double-digit kills. Defensively, Akron had two players reach double figures in digs as Vanessa Del Real had 17 and Eliska Vytiskova had 11. Vytiskova recorded her 14th double-double of the season with 52 assists and 11 digs.
The loss dropped Akron's record to 8-15 overall and 4-7 in MAC action.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Zips found themselves in an early hole, dropping the first set 25-20. Akron trailed by as many as six points as Western Michigan grabbed the advantage for good at 12-11 in a set that was tied up 11 times before the Broncos took control.
SET 2 | Akron responded to pick up a 25-20 victory in set two, evening the match at one set apiece. The Zips led from the first point on in the set to earn the victory. Akron opened its biggest lead of the stanza, five points, to finish off the set, totaling 20 kills while only committing two attack errors along the way. The Zips hit .486 over the course of a set where they racked up 20 kills.
SET 3 | Western Michigan grabbed a 2-1 match lead after taking down the Zips in the third set. The Zips dropped a tough set 25-15. Akron trailed by as many as 10 points as Western Michigan grabbed the advantage for good at 2-1 in a set that was knotted up just once before the Broncos took over the lead.
SET 4 | Akron then lost the fourth set 25-22 to finish off the match. The Zips rallied from a seven-point deficit at 18-11, but it wasn't enough as Western Michigan held on to win the set.
