Zips Fall to Kent State

KENT, Ohio - The Akron volleyball team fell to the Kent State Golden Flashes in five sets (21-25, 14-25, 26-24, 25-8, 9-15) Saturday on the road at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center.
The Zips were led by a double-double from Lauren Baker, who registered 18 kills and 13 digs on the day. Emanouela Christodoulou also added 15 kills to help the offense while Ellen Kinnaird and Karleighana Jones each had 11 kills. On the defensive end, Vanessa Del Real chipped in with 17 digs to go with four blocks from Jones. Eliska Vytiskova also had a double-double after recording 48 assists and 12 digs.
The loss dropped Akron's record to 9-17 overall and 5-9 in MAC play.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Zips found themselves in an early hole, dropping the first set 25-21. Akron trailed by as many as nine points as Kent State grabbed the advantage for good at 6-5 in a set that was tied up three times before the Golden Flashes took control.
SET 2 | Akron then lost set two 25-14 to fall behind in the match two sets to none. Akron trailed by as many as 11 points as Kent State grabbed the advantage for good at 8-7 in a set that was tied up two times before the Golden Flashes took over the lead.
SET 3 | After dropping the opening two sets, Akron fought back to grab the third set and make it a 2-1 match. The Zips came out on top of a tight battle, winning 26-24 in a set that was tied seven times and had one lead change. The Zips racked up 18 kills over the course of the set. The Akron offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.
SET 4 | Akron continued their comeback, winning the fourth set 25-8 to bring the match level at two sets apiece. The Zips scored first and never trailed in the set to secure the victory. Akron finished up the stanza on a strong note, claiming its biggest lead, 17 points, to finish off the set, collecting 15 kills in the process. Akron got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Kent State attacks in the stanza.
SET 5 | Akron dropped the first two sets, but rallied to even it at two sets apiece before falling 15-9 in the fifth set. The Zips fell behind by as many as six points before dropping the fifth set.

The Zips stay on the road as they travel to Eastern Michigan for a pair of matches on November 8 and 9.
