Zips Claim Gold at the Magnus Cup Invite - Four Meet Records and One School Record Broken

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Akron Swimming and Diving team concluded action at the Magnus Cup Invitational with a first-place finish after scoring 1,728.5 points over the three-day event. The Blue and Gold also set four meet records, one school record and one pool record on the final day of competition.
The Zips led all three days to take gold while Tulane finished second with 1,358.5 points and Xavier finished in third with 723.5 points.
Akron began the final day of the Magnus Cup with the top two times in the 100-yard IM prelims. Abigail Daniel finished first with a time of 55.43 while Rebecca Reid placed second with a time of 56.67 to highlight 12 Zips that qualified for the finals. Daniel was once again at the top of the list with a 24.03 time in the 50-yard butterfly prelims while Reid finished fifth with a time of 24.88 and seven Zips advanced to the finals.
Julia Mauter led Akron in the 200-yard breaststroke prelims with a seventh-place finish and a time of 2:03.34. Ada Szwabinska paced the Zips in the 100-yard freestyle prelims with a fifth-place finish and a time of 50.83. Seven Zips moved on to the finals.
In the 200-yard breaststroke prelims, Madelyn Bosler finished third with a time of 2:17.30 to highlight six members of the Blue and Gold to qualify for the finals. Madelyn Gatrall took the top time in the 50-yard prelims after swimming 25.25 while Alanis Santiago also advanced.
Addy Soehnlen was the top placer in the 200-yard butterfly for Akron with a fifth-place finish and a time of 2:03.01. Four other Zips also advanced.
Elizabeth Noble and Laurel Smith finished second and third in platform diving with scores of 219.85 and 207.75.
Elle Couture led the Zips in the 1650-yard freestyle with a third-place finish and a time of 16:59.01. A trio of Zips took the top three times in the 100-yard IM, as Daniel (54.19), Reid (55.20) and Felicia Klintemar (56.94) finished first, second and third. With her time in the 100-IM, Daniel set not only a meet record but broke the school record she set in 2023 (54.21).
Daniel set yet another meet record at the Magnus Cup, this time in the 50-yard Butterfly with a first-place finish after swimming a time of 24.03.
Mauter posted the fastest time for Akron in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:05.08. The 100-yard free saw Gatrall, Szwabinska and Dominika Kossakowska finish fourth, fifth and sixth with times of 50.09, 50.16 and 50.74 respectively.
Bosler took second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:15.17 while Gatrall set a meet record in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 24.81.
The 200-yard butterfly saw Soehnlen pace the Zips with a time of 2:03.42 while the Blue and Gold took first in the 400-yard free relay.
The "Z" squad of Daniel (50.05), Szwabinska (49.85), Gatrall (49.39) and Reid (49.61) captured gold with a time of 3:18.90 to set a meet and pool record. Akron also took third with the "I" squad of Mauter (50.59), Helena Lalkovic (50.72), Kossakowska (50.93) and Hannah Trainer (50.08) swimming a time of 3:22.32.
The Zips return to action when they host the Zippy Invitational from December 5-8 at the Ocasek Natatorium.
