Akron Student-Athletes Post 3.0 GPA or Better for 11 Straight Years

AKRON, Ohio - Student-athletes at the University of Akron combined to achieve a department-wide grade point average of 3.131 in the spring 2024 semester as part of an impressive overall GPA of 3.102 for the 2023-24 academic year.

Collectively, Akron student-athletes own a cumulative departmental GPA of 3.233, with more than 65 percent of Zips maintaining an individual cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better at Akron for 11 straight years.

"We have alignment throughout Athletics and across campus, which keeps everyone focused on our mission of building and maintaining strong academic success while preparing our 500 student athletes for opportunities in life through sport," said Director of Athletics Charles Guthrie. "These young men and women are outstanding representatives of the University of Akron. Their drive to be the best both in competition and in the classroom is evident in the accomplishments that they attained during the spring 2024 semester."

The Zips registered 111 Academic All-Mid-American Conference selections across its 14 MAC-sponsored teams for the 2023-24 academic year.

Akron had 34 student-athletes honored with the MAC President's Award, along with 42 named MAC Commissioner's Honor Roll and 70 to the MAC Honor Roll.

For the spring semester of 2024, 13 of 16 Akron athletics teams achieved a semester grade point average of 3.00 or higher, led by women's soccer earning a program-best 3.659 team GPA for the semester. Additionally, swimming and diving (3.559), rifle (3.537), volleyball (3.491), women's golf (3.468), women's cross country (3.425), women's basketball (3.422), men's soccer (3.400), softball (3.361), baseball (3.339), women's track and field (3.150), men's cross country (3.141) and lacrosse (3.096) each surpassed the 3.00 team GPA threshold.

For the 2023-24 academic year, 13 of the Zips' 16 squads garnered a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better, paced by a program-best 3.674 GPA from women's soccer. Additionally, swimming and diving (3.560), volleyball (3.504), women's cross country (3.394), golf (3.394), men's soccer (3.391), women's basketball (3.389), rifle (3.370), softball (3.355), baseball (3.338), women's track and field (3.183), men's cross country (3.143) and lacrosse (3.105) registered a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better.

The excellence of the Zips in their academic studies was on display as more than 64 percent of Akron's student-athletes, 276 of 429, earned an individual GPA for the term of 3.0 or better, while nearly 41 percent garnered a GPA of 3.50 or higher. On the year, more than 69 percent, 297 of Akron's 429 student-athletes, posted a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, with more than 42 percent registering a GPA of 3.50 or higher.

Fifty-seven of the Zips' student-athletes garnered a perfect 4.0 GPA for the spring semester, including women's soccer (9), baseball (6), football (6), softball (6), women's basketball (4), swimming and diving (4), women's track and field (4), lacrosse (3), men's soccer (3), volleyball (3), men's cross country (2), rifle (2), men's track and field (2), women's cross country (2) and golf (1). For the academic year, 35 Zips owned a 4.0 cumulative GPA, with 23 student-athletes carrying an unblemished GPA overall at Akron.

Football paced the combined list with 38 Zips earning between a 3.0-3.99 for the spring semester and 44 for the 2023-24 academic year. They were followed by baseball (23 overall/27 for 2023-24), swimming and diving (20/24), lacrosse (19/24), men's soccer (18/27), women's soccer (18/18), rifle (14/11), women's track and field (12/13), softball (12/13), women's cross country (10/11), women's basketball (8/9), volleyball (8/16), men's track and field (6/8), golf (5/6), men's cross country (5/6) and men's basketball (4/5).
