NORTON, Ohio – The University of Akron cross country team successfully opened its fall campaign with strong performances from both its men's and women's squads at the 55th Annual Tommy Evans Invitational on Friday (Aug. 30).

Redshirt senior Heriberto Alvarez (Oswego, Ill.) crossed the line in the men's 6K race in a team-best time of 19:18.5, while sophomore Mary Munga (Nyandarau, Kenya) led the Zips in the women's 5K race with a team-best time of 18:20.8.

Akron returns to competition traveling to Muncie, Ind., for the We Fly Ball State Cross Country Challenge on Sept. 14.
