Zips Finish Day One of the Tim Welsh Classic in 2nd Place

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Akron swimming and diving team finished the first day of the Tim Welsh Classic in second place with 581 points.
Ohio State ended the first day in first place with 1,031 points while host Notre Dame rounded out the top three with 525 points.
The Blue and Gold took first place in two events on the first day of competition.
Abigail Daniel led the Zips in the 200-yard free with a third-place finish and a time of 1:30.14 while Helena Lalkovic finished the 500-yard with a time of 4:57.55.
Daniel once again paced the Zips, this time in the 200-yard IM. She finished third with a time of 1:57.54. Ada Szwabinska led the Blue and Gold in the 50-yard free with a fourth-place finish and a time of 22.72.
Akron picked up a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay as the "Z" squad of Madelyn Gatrall (53.71), Claire Cox (1:02.57), Daniel (52.29) and Szwabinska (48.91) finished with a time of 3:37.48.
Laurel Smith led the Zips in the 3-meter dive with an eighth-place finish and a score of 228.55.
The 200-yard medley relay saw the Blue and Gold take second as the "Z" squad of Gatrall (24.62), Cox (28.06), Daniel (23.29) and Szwabinska (21.95) finished with a time of 1:37.92.
Akron claimed gold in the 100-yard fly as Daniel posted the top time of 52.27 while Dominika Kossakowska led the Zips in the 200-yard free with an eighth-place finish and a time of 1:49.14.
Cox took sixth in the 100-yard breast with a time of 1:02.51 while Gatrall claimed gold in the 100-yard back with a time of 52.88.
In the 800-yard free relay, Akron took fourth with the "Z" squad of Gatrall (1:49.27), Kossakowska (1:50.04), Rebecca Reid (1:48.55) and Daniel (1:48.19) finished with a time of 7:16.05.
The second and final day of the Tim Welsh Classic begins Saturday, January 25 at 11 a.m.
