Brown Nets Career-High 22 Points; Akron Falls at Bowling Green, 82-69

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Sparked by a career-high 22 points from redshirt senior Shelbee Brown (Memphis, Tenn.), the University of Akron women's basketball team shot 53.3 percent from beyond the arc, but fell at Bowling Green, 82-69, on Wednesday (Jan. 29).
The Zips (9-12, 3-6) had three players score in double figures, led by Brown, who notched her team-leading sixth double-double of the season with a 22-point and 12-rebound performance. Senior Zakia Rasheed (Avon, Ind.) tacked on 14 points, including four three pointers, off of the bench, while junior Maddie Vejsicky (New Concord, Ohio) added 11 points.
The Akron offense was very productive from beyond the arc, making eight threes on 15 attempts. Rasheed was the most prolific shooter for the Zips, draining four treys in the contest.
Akron forced 13 Bowling Green turnovers. The Zips turned those takeaways into nine points. Brown's three steals led the way for Akron.
How It Happened
After falling behind 18-13, Akron went on a 5-0 run with 1:22 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from senior Alexus Mobley (Indianapolis, Ind.), to tie the game at 18, a score that held at the end of the period. Akron did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 18 points close to the basket.
Bowling Green then took a 37-26 lead before Akron responding by going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a three from Rasheed, to narrow its deficit to 37-32. Bowling Green responded led the Zips, 39-32, at halftime.
Akron trailed 60-51 heading to the fourth quarter. Akron played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.
Bowling Green kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 69-57 advantage before Akron went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Vejsicky's three, to shrink the deficit to 69-62 with 5:33 to go in the contest. Bowling Green responded and outscored the Zips the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 82-69.
