Mobley, Brown Combine to Score 28, Akron Falls to Kent State

AKRON, Ohio - Senior guard Alexus Mobley (Indianapolis, Ind.) and redshirt senior guard Shelbee Brown (Memphis, Tenn.) combined to score 28 total points, but the Akron Zips fell to the Kent State Golden Flashes 64-44 at James A. Rhodes Arena on Saturday.
 Mobley registered 16 points with two rebounds, a block and a steal, while Brown posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Zips (9-20, 3-13). Junior center Liisa Taponen (Tampere, Finland) and freshman guard Liz Murphy (Yackandandah, Australia) added five points and one assist each, while grabbing five and three rebounds, respectively.
Brown pulled down six offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Akron, grabbing 15 boards and turning them into nine second chance points.
Akron forced 13 Kent State turnovers. The Zips turned those takeaways into 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. Senior guard Zakia Rasheed (Avon, Ind.) led Akron with two steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 9-5, Akron went on a 5-0 run with 4:39 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Brown, to take a 10-9 lead. The Zips then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 14-11 advantage. Akron relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 14 points.
The Zips maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 24-23 edge. Akron dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 10 points close to the basket.
Kent State then took a 45-27 lead following intermission before Akron went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Mobley, to trim its deficit to 45-32 with 1:36 to go in the third. Kent State countered and stretched its lead to 52-35 heading into the fourth. Akron played well near the basket, scoring six of its 11 points in the paint.
Kent State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 62-38 advantage before Akron went on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 62-44 with 48 seconds to go in the contest. Kent State responded and outscored the Zips the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 64-44. Akron took advantage of one Kent State turnovers in the quarter, scoring three points off of those takeaways.
