SCOUTING VCU
VCU enters action on Thursday (Aug. 21) on the heels of a 4-6-7 record a season ago, including a 1-4-3 mark in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
VCU returns two of its top three leading scorers from 2024 in junior Andrey Salmeron and senior Andres Rodriguez. The duo registered three and two goals, respectively, on the strength 58 combined shots, including 24 on goal. The Rams will be breaking in a new goalkeeper after John Ermini pulled in 52 saves en route to posting a 1.18 goals against average in 2024.
The contest will be a reunion of sorts for VCU head coach Dave Giffard, who served as an assistant coach at Akron under head coach Caleb Porter from 2006-09.
SERIES HISTORY
Akron is meeting VCU for the eighth time in program history with Akron leading the series, 5-1-1. In the previous encounter between the two schools, the Zips recorded a 4-0 triumph over the Rams on Sept. 6, 2024, at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Sparked by the first career brace from Dyson Clapier, Akron held 13th-rated VCU scoreless and cruised to a 4-0 shutout victory on Sept. 6, 2024, at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Akron started the scoring when Jonas Buechte a goal in the 26th minute (25:04) knocking in the deflection off of a free kick from Victor Gaulmin, who earned the assist on the tally.
The Zips tacked on another score on the first career goal from junior Matt Dreas (Covington, Ky.) at the 38:29 mark, again assisted by Gaulmin.
Akron maintained a 2-0 lead at halftime on the strength of a 10-1 advantage in shots, including 4-0 on net.
The Zips assumed a 3-0 edge on Clapier's 56th-minute (55:12) goal. Emil Jaaskelainen and Malik Henry assisted the goal.

Mitch Budler was chosen as the preseason BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year. Budler posted 51 saves on the campaign en route to recording a 0.93 goals against average on the strength of nine shutouts. In league play, Budler collected 23 saves and a 0.63 goals against average and notched six clean sheets in eight games.

Akron under the leadership of 13th-year head coach Jared Embick, boast a talented 15-member signing class for 2025.
Donning the Akron uniform this fall will be Ignacio Alem (Potomac, Md.), Abdi Bahur (Toronto, Ontario), Gavin Crane (Hinckley, Ohio), Braxton Hayes (Bowie, Md.), Logan LaMaina (Sellersville, Pa.), Farrel Ngongang (Montreal, Quebec), Matthew Paiva (Toronto, Ontario), Malte Schmaus (Hammersbach, Germany) and Dylan Wilkinson (Bradford, England).
The nine players are part of Akron's 2025 signing class joining six members in Aljaz Dodig (Ljubljana, Slovenia), Freddy Kossehasse (McKinney, Texas), Tyler Morck (Bethpage, N.Y.), Jose Pedro (Porto, Portugal), Jamai Royer (Markham, Ontario) and Jack Sullivan (Potomac, Md.), that signed with the Zips prior to the spring semester.

• The evolution of Zippy, UA's mascot, began 40 years ago when the student council decided the University needed a mascot.
• "Zippy" the kangaroo was officially declared the school's mascot on May 1, 1953. The first known printed reference to the mascot as "Zippy" was a 1965 Zip football press brochure. The Buchtelite's first use of the name "Zippy" came Sept. 24, 1965, in an identification of a photo of the cheerleaders listing "Mascot - 'Zippy' - Charles Huettner."
• In 2007, Zippy was named the Capital One National Mascot of the Year.
