Zips Fall to Wyoming in Season Opener

AKRON, Ohio - The Akron Zips opened their 2025 season at home Thursday night but couldn't crack the scoreboard, falling 10-0 to Wyoming at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Health Field.
The Zips' defense kept them within striking distance, holding the Cowboys (1-0) to just a field goal through three quarters, but the offense struggled to sustain drives. Akron (0-1) managed 228 total yards and finished just 3 of 15 on third down.
As a team, Akron recorded 48 tackles with Shammond Cooper (St. Louis, Mo.)Â notching a team-high 10 tackles. Justin Anderson (East Palo Alto, Calif)Â and Alex Branch (Twinsburg, Ohio) followed closely behind with nine takedowns each. The unit forced an interception and held Wyoming to just one red-zone score on two trips.
Akron broke out the Turnover Tire in the season opener when Markus Boswell (Austin Texas) recorded an interception off a deflected pass courtesy of Bruno Dall (Hamburg, Germany) in the third quarter.
Quarterback Ben Finley (Phoenix, Ariz.) went 16 of 38 for 139 yards and one interception, while Marquese Williams (Harrisburg, Pa.)Â paced the Zips rushing attack by accumulating 30 yards over the course of the game, averaging 5 yards per carry. Sean Patrick (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) added with 26 rushing yards and a team-high 47 receiving yards.Â
Akron also got a significant contribution from Kyan Mason (Cleveland, Ohio), who caught three passes for 29 yards.
Joseph Castle (North Huntingdon, Pa.)Â punted six times for the Zips with an average of 49.5 yards per punt while pinning the Cowboys inside their own 20 three times.
How It Happened
The Zips and Cowboys played a scoreless first quarter before Wyoming struck first on a 25-yard field goal with 5:20 left in the second quarter. Wyoming would find the end zone in the fourth quarter to take it's 10-0 lead on a 35-yard strike with 4:21 left in the final frame of action.
