Zips Falls to Ohio in Four Sets

ATHENS, Ohio – The University of Akron volleyball team battled Ohio through four competitive sets Saturday afternoon, earning a second-set victory before the Bobcats pulled away to claim a 3-1 Mid-American Conference victory, 25-21, 18-25, 25-22, 25-20, at the Convocation Center.
Akron moved to 6-10 overall and 1-3 in MAC play, while Ohio improved to 11-4 overall and 4-0 in conference action. The Zips finished with 60 kills, 48 assists, 52 digs, five team blocks and two service aces. Akron hit .282 for the match, including a .406 mark in its second-set victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Ohio took the opening set, 25-21, despite a strong offensive effort from Akron. The Zips recorded 15 kills and hit .205 in the frame, while Ohio finished with 14 kills and a .314 hitting percentage.
Akron responded in the second set with its best offensive performance of the afternoon. The Zips produced 18 kills on 32 attacks with just five errors, hitting .406. Akron controlled the set from the opening points and evened the match with a 25-18 victory.
The third set remained competitive throughout, with Akron recording 14 kills and hitting .250. The Zips stayed within striking distance late in the frame before Ohio closed out a 25-22 victory to take a 2-1 match lead.
Akron continued to battle in the fourth set, hitting .290 with 13 kills. The Zips pulled within 20-24 late in the frame, but Ohio answered with the final point to secure the 25-20 victory and complete the four-set win.
GAME NOTES
- Gash leads Akron: Delaney Gash paced the Zips with a match-high 17 kills on 37 attacks, hitting .378. She also added two block assists and finished with a team-high 18 points.
- Ozoh strong at the net: Chidera Ozoh recorded 11 kills on 18 attacks while hitting .444. She added one solo block and two block assists for 13 points.
- Wolf delivers efficient attack: Lyndi Wolf posted nine kills on 15 attacks, hitting .533, while adding one assist, two block assists and six digs.
- Aprati adds nine: Noelle Aprati contributed nine kills on 21 attacks and hit .333, adding one block assist.
- Setting the offense: Clara Christensen led Akron with 25 assists, while Masa Prascevic added 12 assists. Christensen also recorded eight digs.
- Del Real leads defensively: Vanessa Del Real paced Akron with 16 digs and added eight assists.
- Chausse at the service line: Reilly Chausse recorded a team-high two service aces and added nine digs.
- Strong offensive performance: Akron finished with 60 kills and hit .282, compared to 58 kills and a .309 hitting percentage for Ohio.
- Second-set surge: Akron recorded 18 kills and hit .406 in the second set, its best offensive set of the match.
- Balanced attack: Akron had three players finish with at least nine kills, led by Gash's 17, followed by Ozoh's 11 and Wolf's nine.
- At the net: Akron finished with five team blocks, led by Ozoh's three total blocks. Gash and Wolf each recorded two block assists.
- Competitive fourth: Akron trailed 24-19 before cutting the deficit to 24-20 on a Gash kill, but Ohio closed out the match on the following point.
- Attendance: Saturday's match drew 347 fans at the Convocation Center.
