Zips Sweep Doubleheader, Defeating UConn and Western Carolina

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC --Â The Akron Zips Swept a doubleheader on day two of the Lowcountry Classic on Saturday, defeating UConn (2-0) in the opener and Western Carolina (10-1) in the second game.
GAME 1 vs UConn --
Akron won the rematch against UConn 2-0 as Sophia Wygast registered a double, RBI and run scored to led the offense. Sydney Selker also issued a double and run scored, while Lily Sullivan recorded the Zips third base hit.

Madie Jamrog threw seven scoreless innings, allowing only three hits while facing 24 batters with one strikeout and a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning. Junior Sophia Wygast came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron and get them on the board.
The Zips then tacked on a run in the second inning to complete their scoring in the ballgame.
GAME NOTES
» Jamrog tossed a three-hit shutout for the Zips.
» Akron's highest scoring inning was the second, when it pushed one run across.
» Akron grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
» Akron pitchers faced 24 UConn hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and 12 fly balls while striking out one.
» Wygast led the Zips at the plate, going 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
GAME 2Â vs Western Carolina --
Nine Zips scattered base hits as Akron defeated Western Carolina 10-1 to complete a doubleheader sweep on Saturday at the Lowcountry Classic. Sydney Selker and Sophia Wygast accounted for the Zips extra-base hit as Selker sprayed a triple and Wygast doubled, while both hitters recorded a pair of RBI. Meagan Lee also had a pair of RBI and runs scored to go along with a 1 for 1 effort at the plate.

Macy Walters earned the win, throwing 5.0 inning and allowing one run on three hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Akron's offense started clicking and put up eight runs, including a two-run triple off the bat of freshman Sydney Selker and a two-run single from freshman Meagan Lee.
The Catamounts failed to push any runs across before the Zips offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Akron pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of freshman Sophia Wygast that brought home freshman Brooke Sivek and Lee, which brought the score to 10-0 in favor of the Zips. Western Carolina put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Akron still coasted to the 10-1 win.

» Every Akron starter reached base safely in the win.

» The Zips had control of the rest of the game after jumping ahead of the Catamounts 8-0 in the top of the second.
