ZIPS AT A GLANCE
Akron went 1-3 this past week, winning the series finale against Western Michigan. The Zips are 7-9 overall and 1-2 in the MAC.
Brady Bowen made an impact at the plate and on the mound last week.
Hitting his first collegiate home run in the bottom of the 9th inning against Western Michigan on Sunday, Bowen helped the Zips walk off the Broncos 3-2. He had two hits in four at-bats.
He also threw 6.2 innings in relief against WMU on Friday. After being thrown into action in the first inning on short notice with the bases loaded, Bowen allowed just one run on four hits while striking two and walking one over 6.2 innings as the Zips tied the game in his tenure on the mound.
Brennan Morgan leads the Zips in average (.353), doubles (7), second in hits (19) and tied with Brody Chrisman for RBI (16). Chrisman and Easton Amundson lead the way in home runs (4), while Blake Bowen leads the way in walks (19). Chrisman is a perfect 9-of-9 on stolen bases.
On the mound, Elijah Griffith and Trieg Matthews hold two wins while Josiah Ross has pitched in a team-high eight games. Brady Bowen leads the staff with a 0.71 ERA in four appearances and 12.2 innings of work. Griffith leads the way with 22.2 innings of work in four starts and holds a 2.38 ERA and has 12 strikeouts this season.
As a team, Akron is hitting .242 with 96 runs scored on 123 hits. The Zips have 83 RBI, 33 doubles, two triples and 13 home runs. The Zips are 39-of-44 on stolen bases this season. The Blue and Gold's pitching staff has allowed 125 runs, 108 earned, while striking out 106 and walking 95.Â
SCOUTING REPORT
UMass enters the series with a 4-5 overall record and a 0-3 record in the MAC. The Minutemen have fallen in five straight games and were swept at Toledo to begin conference play.
Anthony Tirado leads the way in average (.395), hits (15) and stolen bases (8). Vance Bonior is the leader in doubles (2), while three players have two home runs this season. Gavin O'Brien holds the top mark for RBI (11) and walks (11).
On the mound, Callen Powers leads the way in ERA (1.93), starts (3), appearances (3), strikeouts (17) and a team-high 18.2 innings pitched.
As a team, UMass is hitting .258 with 55 runs scored on 77 hits. The Minutemen have 51 RBI, 8 doubles, two triples and nine home runs. UMass is 21-of-25 on stolen bases this season. The Minutemen pitching staff has allowed 67 runs, 63 earned, while striking out 65 and walking 50.Â
