AKRON, Ohio - The Akron softball team split a doubleheader with the Miami Redhawks on Saturday, March 21, winning the first game 11-3 while falling 8-7 in the second game.

GAME 1 | Akron 11, Miami (OH) 3

Meagan Lee collected three hits to help lead the Akron Zips past the Miami (OH) RedHawks 11-3 on Saturday.

In addition to her three hits, Lee had a double, a triple and two RBI to lead the Zips. Lily Sullivan compiled a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-2 with a triple, a walk and two RBI. Katie Cantrell also helped out for Akron, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBI.

Macy Walters (8-7) got the win for Akron (12-16, 4-0). The right-hander went five innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on five hits, allowing four walks and striking out one.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Zips first put runs on the board in the second inning. Akron got an RBI single from Delaney Jenkinson, scoring Cantrell from third base.

The score stayed at 1-1 until the very next inning, when the Zips put runs on the scoreboard once again. Akron scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run triple from Sullivan, which brought the score to 4-1 in favor of the Zips.

Akron held Miami (OH) scoreless before building its lead to 8-1 the following inning. The Zips bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Kenzie Gatti.

The RedHawks gained ground, closing the gap to 8-3 until Akron added some insurance in the fifth. The Zips picked up two runs in the frame, the big hit being an RBI double from Sophia Wygast, bringing the score to 10-3 in favor of Akron.

Akron received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, but the Zips fell to the Miami (OH) RedHawks 8-7 on Saturday.

Sophia Wygast led the offense with three hits, a home run, three RBI and one run. Katie Cantrell drove in two runs on a home run while four other Zips recorded a hit.

Macy Walters (8-8) took the loss in the circle for Akron (13-17, 5-1). The right-hander went three innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing no walks and striking out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Zips were trailing 7-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Akron hit two home runs in the inning on the way to scoring seven runs. Miami (OH) then scored one time over the remaining three innings to break the tie and grab the 8-7 win.
